Martha Bergman

Martha Bergman

Martha Bergman died Nov. 14, 2007. She was born May 11, 1924 to Johann Peter and Maria Enns Bergmann in Rueckenau, Ukraine. The family immigrated to Canada in 1924 shortly after Martha’s birth, and settled in Manitoba and then Virgil, Ont., where they thrived. Martha became a registered nursing assistant in 1970 and served at both the St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake hospitals until retirement. Martha loved the Lord and treasured fellowship at Virgil MB Church, now Cornerstone Community Church. The funeral was Nov. 19 at Cornerstone Community Church.

Margarete Breul

Margarete Breul

Margarete Breul (nee Schellenberg) died June 23, 2007 at age 102. She was born in 1905 in Russia, and later moved to Winkler, Man. Margarete was baptized in Russia on June 6, 1923, and became a member of the Winkler MB Church in 1955. Predeceased by husband Henry in 1997; 22 siblings, she is mourned by her son Peter; 2 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild. The funeral was June 28 at Wiebe Funeral Home Chapel, Winkler.

Albertina Hiebert

Albertina Hiebert

Albertina Hiebert died Sept. 17, 2007. She was born Mar. 29, 1903 to Albert and Emilie Karlenzig. As a teenager she worked hard on the farm close to Plum Coulee, Man., and was baptized upon confession of faith at Morris German Baptist Church. At 19 she married David M. Hiebert and began farming. She was a diligent homemaker, loved reading, playing Scrabble, and enjoyed crafts – embroidery, knitting, patchwork, quilting, and crocheting. On her Singer treadle machine she sewed many outfits for her children. Albertina and David later joined an MB church, serving as a deacon couple and frequently opening their humble home to visiting ministers and evangelists. She is mourned by children Irene, Viola (Jake) Peters, Elva (Alex) Suderman, and Wesley (Sharon); 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Sara Hiebert

Sara Hiebert

Sara Hiebert died Jan. 1, 2008 at exactly 100 years old. She was born Jan. 1, 1908 to John and Marie Wiebe in Kuruschan, Russia. After she was miraculously healed at 13, she accepted Christ and was baptized at 15. Sara’s family immigrated to Ontario in 1924. She met Henry Hiebert at Leamington MB Church, and they married March 13, 1938. Henry died at age 58 after a brief illness and Sara lived for a time with her daughter in Virgil, Ont. She also lived at Pleasant Manor and then Vineland U.M. Predeceased by Henry; son Albert, Sara is mourned by her children Margaret, Siegfried, Otto, and Marianne; 14 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 3 siblings. The memorial service was Jan. 4 at Cornerstone Community Church, Virgil, Ont.

Jacob Benjamin Janz

Jacob Benjamin Janz died Jan. 19, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. He was born June 13, 1931 to Abram and Justina Janz in Main Centre, Sask. Jake left the farm to obtain his bachelor of education degree, and after teaching in rural Sask., spent almost 30 years with the Regina School Board as a principal in various elementary schools. After retirement, Jake was executive director of Far East Broadcasting Company for Canada, based in Burnaby, B.C., and later moved back to Regina. Jake led Bible classes and directed choirs for more than 25 years and enjoyed singing in quartets. Predeceased by his first wife Ruby, he is mourned by his wife Elaine; children Bruce, Janine (Sheldon) Stener, Lydine (Rick) Denzin; 3 grandchildren. The memorial service was Jan. 24 at Faith Baptist Church, Regina.

Jacob (Jake) Matties

Jacob (Jake) Matties died Jan. 14, 2008. He was born May 24, 1914 to Wilhelm and Justina Matties in Slavgorod, Siberia. Jake’s mother died when he was six, and after his father remarried, the family moved to Moscow in 1929, eventually immigrating to Rosthern, Sask. Jake worked for various farmers and delivered milk. After his family moved to La Glace, Alta., he began farming in Valhalla Centre, Alta. Jake accepted Christ as Saviour at 20 and was baptized in LaGlace MB Church, attending Bible school for 2 years. He met Louise Riesen in Yarrow, B.C., and they married in Oct. 1944. They ran a raspberry farm and later purchased a dairy farm in East Chilliwack. They were church custodians in Yarrow, B.C., and upon retirement moved to Clearbrook, joining Bakerview MB Church. Jake was an active member in church in prayer and sound ministries. He is mourned by Louise; 6 siblings; nephews and nieces. The memorial service was Jan. 18 at Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.

Abram Pauls

Abram H. Pauls died Dec. 24, 2007. He was born Aug. 9, 1915 to Henry K. and Helena Pauls in Kronstal, Ukraine. The family immigrated to Canada in 1923, moving to Glenbush in 1927 where they established a homestead. After five years at Bethany Bible School, he joined the Western Children’s Mission in 1942, building a schoolhouse south of Mildred, and becoming the teacher and preacher for that community for 10 years. He married Rubina Quiring June 17, 1943 and moved to Glenbush where Abram developed his carpentry business. Building was a passion, and everything received his attention to detail. Glenbush MB Church called Abram their leader for 24 years. He retired in 1985 and moved to Saskatoon in 1998. In his quiet, humble way, he impacted more people than he ever imagined. Predeceased by 7 siblings and 1 grandson in 2004, he is mourned by Rubina; children Gloria (Chuck) Storey, Leo (Elaine), Ron (Jean), Stan (Connie), Dave (Karen), Joanne (Grant) Neufeldt; 22 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren. The memorial service was Dec. 28 at Forest Grove Community Church, Saskatoon.

Gerald (Gerry) Wayne Penner

Gerald (Gerry) Wayne Penner

Gerald (Gerry) Wayne Penner died Nov. 8, 2007 at age 53. He was born Dec. 14, 1953 to John and Anne Penner in St. Catharines, Ont. He moved to Man. at 19 to attend Winkler Bible School and later settled in Winnipeg. He worked various jobs in Winnipeg and was employed with Centra Gas and Manitoba Hydro for 27 years. He enjoyed many sports including golf, cross country skiing, and hockey. He was a caring, loving person who had many friends, with some friendships spanning over thirty years. Friends at Beginning Experience will miss his caring smile and kind words. Gerry had a strong faith in God, which gave him courage and hope during his recent illness. He is mourned by his wife Linda Mulvey; children Sam and Rita; stepsons Colin (Candace) and Andrew Campbell; 4 siblings.

Annie Redekopp

Annie Redekopp

Annie Redekopp (nee Boldt) died Nov. 27, 2007. She was born May 4, 1918 in Russia. Her family immigrated to Canada in 1928, settling in Grand Prairie, Alta., where they cleared the land to build their first homestead. Annie attended Bible school in B.C. and in 1951 met and married David Redekopp, settling in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. They became members at Virgil MB Church, now Cornerstone Community Church, where she was very involved in the ladies group and quilting for MCC. In 1991, David died, and after a series of strokes, Annie moved to Heritage Place (Pleasant Manor) in Virgil. She is mourned by her children David Jr., Helen, and Katie; grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter. The memorial service was Nov. 30 at Cornerstone Community Church.

Lydia Sawatzky

Lydia Sawatzky

Lydia Sawatzky died suddenly Jan. 5, 2008 at age 41. She was born Sept. 18, 1966 to Dietrich and Helena Schroeder in Lomaplata, Paraguay. She married Alfred Sawatzky Aug. 31, 1985. Lydia was a selfless, loving mother and wife devoted to her family. She loved movie nights and games with the family. She always cared for others, and later in life decided to become a nurse. She excelled in her studies and was thrilled with her new job at Concordia Hospital, Winnipeg. She is mourned by Alfred; children Mark (Chelsea), Cynthia (Joel); parents Dietrich and Helena; 3 siblings. The funeral service was Jan. 10 at North Kildonan MB Church, Winnipeg.

Jacob Schellenberg

Jacob Schellenberg died Jan. 16, 2008. He was born Mar. 3, 1922 to Jacob and Katherine Schellenberg in Burwalde, Russia. His family came to Canada in 1926 and eventually settled in the Cabri area. Accepting Christ at 15 and baptized at 20, Jacob attended Herbert Bible School where he met Susie Nickel. They were married in 1945, attended Canadian Bible College in Regina for a year, and settled in Beechy, Sask. Jacob worked at Link’s Garage, and later the Credit Union. He was always active in church, preaching and teaching Sunday school as well as serving in the Gideon ministry for 30 years. He retired in 1985 and moved to Swift Current, Sask. In Aug. 2007, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He is mourned by Susie; children Gloria (Wes) Berg, Nancy (Ken) Peters, Angela (Alvin) Plett, Wayne (Josie); 2 siblings. The memorial service was Jan. 19 at Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current.

John Sperling

John Sperling died Jan. 16, 2008. He was born May 10, 1924 to John and Erna Sperling in Crimea, Russia. They were forced to abandon John’s brother and sister who had died while the family fled by train to Germany. Later they immigrated to Santa Catarina, Brazil, where they began their new life in a barn together with 40 other families. In 1948, John took over the family dairy for the next 20 years. He was proud to have been one of the first car and TV owners in town. He attended a Janz Team crusade and accepted Christ as Saviour, and was baptized into the Curitiba MB Church. John met Mary Kasper in 1969, and 2 and a half months later they married at Culloden MB Church, Vancouver. The wedding was in English, even though he didn’t yet understand it. John worked in cabinet and furniture shops in Vancouver and Clearbrook, and eventually held his own shop to be closer to family. John has a great sense of humour and was known for his practical jokes. He is mourned by Mary; children John (Lori), Anne-Marie (Norbert) Penner, Elizabeth (Paul) Tschetter; 5 grandchildren; 1 sibling.

Albert Thielmann

Albert Thielmann

Albert Thielmann died Oct. 21, 2007. He was born Sept. 12, 1930 to Herman and Olga Thielmann in Kudaschewka, Ukraine. When Albert was 7, the NKVD took his father. During WWII his family experienced God’s provision daily as they fled west. Albert was baptized in Germany prior to 1948 when they finally immigrated to Canada and settled in Coaldale, Alta. He moved to Vancouver and married Mary Hildebrandt. They helped found Willingdon MB Church. Albert owned and operated a construction and development company. In 1978 the family moved to Mt. Lehman where they planted a hazelnut orchard and joined Central Heights Church. Albert’s gift of hospitality, humour, and generosity brought many opportunities to share the goodness of God. Albert felt privileged to serve on the board of Logos Canada and support missionaries in the former Soviet Union. He is mourned by Mary; children Marv (Heather), Bruno (Sharon), Al (Debbie), Marianne (Bruce) Konrad, Evelyn (Steve) Klassen; 22 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; 3 brothers. The memorial service was Nov. 3 at Central Heights Church, Abbotsford, B.C.

Mary (Marie) Thiessen

Mary (Marie) Thiessen

Mary (Marie) Thiessen died Dec. 20, 2007 at age 94. She was born May 15, 1913 to David and Maria Penner in Ukraine. Raised in Rovnapol, Siberia, Marie moved back to Ukraine and then left for Canada in 1925. The rest of her childhood years were spent on a farm in Grassy Lake, Alta. At Coaldale Bible School, she met Henry Thiessen and married June 16, 1935. They raised six children while farming and teaching in various places in southern Alberta. Marie lived in Lethbridge, Alta., Morden, Man., and Abbotsford, B.C., before moving to Cariboo Lodge in Williams Lake, B.C. in 2000. Those who knew Marie felt loved. Predeceased by Henry in 1975, daughter Laura Grace, and 4 siblings; she is mourned by children Dolores (Harry) Goerz, Arni (Rosemarie), Willard (Betty), Henry Elmer (Shirley), Dave (Jan), Ernie (Debbie); 27 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 4 siblings. The memorial service was Dec. 28 at Cariboo Bethel Church, Williams Lake, B.C.

Bernard Thiessen

Bernard Thiessen died Dec. 24, 2007 in a drowning accident in Ontario. He was born April 24, 1946 in Mexico. At 8, Bernard’s family moved to Swift Current, Sask. for 8 years, and then to Chin, Alta. Though slightly mentally challenged, in his unique way he realized he needed a church to belong to, and for many years set out to walk to a church in Coaldale some 10 miles away, sometimes getting a ride. In 1976, he was baptized on confession of faith and remained a member of Coaldale MB Church. Bernard enjoyed horseback riding, puzzling, and going for walks. Predeceased by 5 siblings, he is mourned by 5 sisters; two sisters-in-law; 3 brothers-in-law; many nieces and nephews, and a world of friends. Though his body was never recovered, a memorial service was held Jan. 5 at Coaldale MB Church.
