Five questions

Church: Sema Community Church

Pastor: Lance Christie

Location: Calgary, Alberta

What’s your church mission statement?

Disciples making Disciples. Sema is the Greek root word for “sign.” Our vision statement is that we’ll be a “signpost pointing to Jesus.”

What makes your church unique?

Our congregation is made up of people who come from different parts of Canada and, indeed, the world. I’ve been in church ministry for more than 15 years and have never been asked so many times what a church name means as I have at Sema – it opens the door for me to talk about our vision.

What was a defining moment for your congregation?

We’re presently involved in a critical point in our church life. As a church plant, we’ve spent so much time and energy developing a Sunday service that we’ve neglected our reason for existence: being and making disciples. We’re now rectifying that situation.

If you could choose a famous Christian to come and speak, who would it be and why?

N.T. Wright. I’ve heard him speak before and I find his writings stimulating and informative.

What would your neighbours miss about you if you left your community today?

This is an excellent question. We concluded they might miss our sign (we meet in a community centre), hence my answer to question 3!

Sema Community Church enjoys family camp.
