Does homosexuality in Mennonite circles occur at the same rate as the general population? That was one of the questions asked at the Family & Sexuality in Mennonite History conference at Conrad Grebel University College, Oct. 12–13. The series of papers presented at the conference is part of a project examining the “divergent voices of Canadian Mennonites,” started by the Mennonite Historical Society of Canada. Characteristic of the individualism of our times, two women presented, in amongst academic papers, their personal experiences as lesbians. Someone in the audience got up and asked Priscilla Reimer, “Have you ever thought about where you will spend eternity?” Reimer was ready with her answer because she said her mother had asked her the very same question. Ed Janzen of Conrad Grebel College concluded in his paper that homosexuality among Mennonites is, indeed, the same as that of the general population. However, he admitted he had little data to work with. —with files from Elfrieda Schroeder
