Poem

In the womb

Kyla Steinkraus

Previous | Next

In hiatus
Within the belly of a girl
Between the gulf of worlds,
You, the genesis of creation,
A God condensed in a single cell.

Sovereign Lord,
Seed of life
You are the sheltered embryo
Coiled against warm, wet walls
Shaped by your own hands.

Inside the hollow
You grow,
Swelling into soft folds
Look, the architecture of your fingers
The silken structure of your bones.

Soft hair
Curled toes
Pink ribbons of skin
You rained fire on Carmel
You governed the seas and bent back the sun.

Incredible
You, the immortal
Nourished by the mortal,
You, the forger of mountains
Defenseless,
Dependent on a woman’s womb.
