Arnold Stewart Duke

Arnold Stewart Duke

Arnold Stewart Duke died Aug. 3 from cancer. He was born Nov. 22, 1946 in Yorkton, Sask. to Bill and Emily Duke. He spent many childhood summers at his grandparent’s farm near Theodore, Sask., and moved to Saskatoon to become an operating room technician. In 1972, he married Ronda and later joined the Veterinary College where he worked for 32 years. Arnold was liked by everyone who knew him, and was known for his friendly, cheerful nature and willingness to give generously of time and energy. He is mourned by Ronda; children Michelle (Tim) Kacuiba, and Michael (Shannon); 2 granddaughters; his mother; 7 siblings. The memorial service was Aug. 8 at West Portal Church, Saskatoon.

Marwood Dyck

Marwood Dyck died peacefully at home Aug. 14. He was born to Gerhard and Louise Dyck in southern Ont., shortly after his parents emigrated from Russia. He attended Tabor College and married Naomi Hiebert in 1954. Marwood was a teacher and administrator at Fresno Unified School District for over 40 years, and later moved his family to Amsterdam, where he was director of Menno Travel Service. He is mourned by Naomi; children Eloise (Herman) Janzen, Christine (Donald) Lovell, Carl (Sue), and Elizabeth (Michael) Gottsch; 12 grandchildren; 2 sisters; 1 brother.

Elizabeth (Betty) Esau

Elizabeth (Betty) Esau

Betty Esau died Aug. 31. She was born Dec. 20, 1921 in Herbert, Sask. in a family of 12 children. The family moved to Abbotsford, B.C., where she attended Bible school and enjoyed teaching children with challenges – at VBS and various camps. Betty became assistant to the matron at the “Girls’ Home” in Vancouver. She then served as head cook for 12 years at Columbia Bible College where she was an encouragement to staff and students. After retirement she enjoyed travelling until suffering a severe stroke. She is mourned by sisters Mary Esau and Gertrude Klassen; stepsister Mary Willms; 1 brother. The memorial service was Sept. 6 at Clearbrook MB Church.

Jacob Flatt

Jacob Flatt

Jacob (Jack) Flatt died Aug. 14. He was born Nov. 7, 1922 in Wygoda, Poland to Philip and Sophie Flatt, and immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1928. He spent the rest of his life working in the Elmwood/East Kildonan area of Winnipeg, giving generously of his design talents and construction abilities to Elmwood MB Church. In 1947, he married Mary Rose Falk and set up an auto body business with his father. Later, he joined Motor Coach Industries designing Greyhound buses. He retired to a comfortable and contented life in 1987, spending time tuning up his 1991 Buick, “putzkying” around the house and taking care of the family cottage in Gimli. He is mourned by Mary; daughters Lorraine (James) Friesen and Linda Eloise; sisters Olga Shier and Elsie (Alfred) Neufeld. The memorial service was Aug. 20, at Elmwood MB Church.

Jacob Hendricks

Jacob Hendricks

Jacob Hendricks died Aug. 16. at age 95. He was born Oct. 21, 1911 in Russia to Dietrich and Bertha Hendricks, who settled in Grassy Lake, Alta. in 1930. He married Annie Koehn Oct. 4, 1936, and built a farm, eventually retiring to Lethbridge, Alta. Jacob was a devoted and loving husband, and was described as a quiet, compassionate, generous, hard working, and humble man. He is mourned by Annie; children Jake (Annette), Ernie (Susan), Ed (Helen), Dave (Elvira), Nancy, Ruth (John) Domaschenko; 9 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 sister. The memorial service was Aug. 25 at Evangelical Free Church, Lethbridge, Alta.

Russel Carson Kennedy

Russel Carson Kennedy

Russel Carson Kennedy died July 26 at age 95. He was born in April 28, 1912 in Wapella, Sask. and went to school in Rocanville, Sask. He spent many years travelling and working across Canada. Russel married Rachel Stevenson in 1950, and they lived in Calgary, Harris, Sask., and eventually Saskatoon. There he cut ice blocks out of the South Saskatchewan River and worked in maintenance for 16 years for the provincial government. He enjoyed motorcycles, flying, and building furniture for friends and relatives. He is mourned by Rachel; children Ruth, Lois, Samuel (Vi), and Peggy (Clifford) Dirkson; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; 3 siblings. The memorial service was July 30 at West Portal Church, Saskatoon.

Frank (Franz) Kessler

Frank (Franz) Kessler died July 27. He was born Feb. 14, 1927 near Hague, Sask. to Herman and Katherine Kessler. He began school at age 10, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He worked on farms, canneries, and construction, eventually buying his first car, a Model T Ford. Frank gave his life to the Lord after praying in a hayloft, and soon after married Edna Letkeman in 1952. He worked as a bricklayer based in Martensville, Sask., and later for MCC. Frank was a foster parent to many, and left a legacy of faith wherever he went. He enjoyed fishing, playing games, and going for coffee with friends. Frank was a member of Warman MB Church for many years. Predeceased by sons Warren and Nollan, he is mourned by Edna; children Ken, Winnifred (Don) Reddekopp, Eunice (Greg) Amy, Darcy, Jason; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 7 siblings. The memorial service was Aug. 1 at West Portal MB Church, Saskatoon.

Elizabeth Klassen

Elizabeth Klassen

Elizabeth Klassen died Aug. 18. She was born Oct. 12, 1931 to Peter and Helen Voth near Herbert, Sask. As a young girl, she was baptized and later attended Herbert Bible School and worked for several families in housekeeping. She married John Klassen in 1954 and had three children. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and quilting blankets and afghans. Elizabeth loved music, singing in choirs and playing her keyboard. She was an avid gardener, cook, and traveller as well. She served her church in youth group, the food committee, and Pioneer Girls. She is mourned by John; children Josie (Danny) Caputo, Charlene (Murray) Martens, and Carl (Marjorie); 10 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; 3 brothers; 3 sisters. The memorial service was Aug. 18 at Herbert (Sask.) MB Church.

Hildegard Lemke

Hildegard Lemke died Aug. 13. She was born Dec. 9, 1933 in Kaiserslauten, Germany to Hugo and Susan Scheffler. The family moved to Ritzville, Wash. in 1951. Hildegard married Helmut Lemke in 1956 and they established their home in Vancouver, B.C. A graduate of the University of Washington, Hildegard taught high school until the arrival of their first child. Her spiritual journey led her through many phases, both in and out of formal church settings. She was a member of Point Grey Inter-Mennonite Fellowship. As a gifted artist with seemingly boundless energy, Hildegard modelled unconditional love and graciously lived life to the fullest; she was not afraid to die. She is mourned by Helmut; children Michael, Krista, and Hanno, and their spouses; 4 grandchildren. The memorial service was Aug. 25 at Peace Mennonite Church, Richmond, B.C.

Helen Harder Loewen

Helen Harder Loewen died Aug. 24. She was born Feb. 20, 1919 in Molotschna, Russia to Heinrich Peter and Helena Harder. The family settled near Winkler, Man. in 1925, and Helen accepted the Lord when she was 9. Soon after, she felt God’s call to be a missionary and later trained as a nurse at St. Boniface. After attending Winkler Bible School, Helen sailed in 1946 for Calcutta, India, where she grew to love the people of Andhra Pradesh through medical service and Bible studies in her home. Her hospitality was a blessing for many young leaders and missionaries. After 25 years with MBMSI, she returned to Toronto and married Peter J. Loewen in 1977. Helen eventually joined Elmwood MB Church in Winnipeg. She is mourned by sisters Tina (Peter) Doerksen, Gertrude Klassen, Margaret Harder, and Susie (Henry) Loewen. The memorial service was Aug. 29 at Elmwood MB Church, Winnipeg.

Jacob Aron Martens

Jacob Aron Martens

Jacob Aron Martens died peacefully Aug. 25. He was born October 13, 1914 in Ukraine to Aron and Helena Martens. Jacob saw the cruelty and devastation that anarchy and rebellion brought to their peaceful life. Famine ravaged the land, but MCC rescued many who would have starved to death. Jacob moved to Yarrow, B.C. in 1930, where he laboured in hop yards, built roads, and worked on farms. In 1938 he married Katie Riesen and together they managed a dairy farm in Sumas Prairie for 20 years. He was heavily involved in church as a deacon for 25 years, along with radio ministry. Jacob had a warm, compassionate, and godly spirit, with a genuine acceptance that made everyone feel welcome in his company. He is mourned by Katie; daughter Frieda (John) Neufeld; 2 grandchildren; brothers Aron and Victor (Beth). The memorial service was Aug. 31 at Bakerview MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.

Merna Jean Reimer

Merna Jean Reimer

Merna Jean Reimer died July 20 at age 45. She was born Aug. 29, 1961 in Fort St. John, B.C. to Dave and Margaret Kyllo, and spent most of her school years living on a ranch where she was an adept horsewoman, guiding hunters in the mountains with her father. Merna attended the University of Victoria and afterwards taught in rural schools near Fort St. John. She attended North Peace MB Church and married Carl Reimer in 1991. There she taught Sunday school and VBS ministries. Although she fought ovarian cancer for a number of years, Merna was not bitter with God in being called home at an early age. The memorial service was July 26 at the North Peace MB Church.

John P. Rempel

John P. Rempel

John P. Rempel died June 7. He was born June 2, 1927 to Peter and Anna Rempel. John lived in the Great Dear/Borden, Sask. area for 77 years, attending Borden MB Church and Hoffnungsfeld School. He committed his life to Christ, attended Bethany Bible School, and later married Anne Peters in 1952. Together they farmed near Borden and he was involved in various community activities, including the Sask. Wheat Pool Committee, Thresher men’s club, church board, Sunday school, the Great Deer Quartet, and Open Doors ministry. John loved the people around him and was a caring husband and father. In 2004, John and Anne moved to Saskatoon, where they attended West Portal Church. Predeceased by son Phil, he is mourned by Anne; children Dennis (Lori), Dale (Beverly), and Faye; 1 grandson; 3 brothers; 5 sisters. The memorial service was June 11 at West Portal Church.

Michael Elliot Spencer

Michael Elliot Spencer

Michael Elliott Spencer died in a car accident Sept. 9. Born May 4, 1974 in Vancouver to Tim and Louise Spencer, he grew up in Nelson, B.C. and attended Columbia Bible College for two years. Baptized on confession of faith April 29, 2001 at Arnold Community Church, he worked the last three years as lead hand welding fabricator at Valid Manufacturing in Salmon Arm. Mike was a reserved, sensitive, big man who enjoyed the outdoors and sports. He is mourned by his wife Colleen; children Justin and Kara; parents; siblings Jennifer (Jarrett) Wilke and Steve (Jeanette). The memorial service was Sept. 12 at River of Life Community Church, Sorrento, B.C.

Luise Schierling

Luise Schierling

Luise Schierling died July 31. She was born Dec. 21, 1926 in Orloff, Ukraine to Peter and Suzanna Kliewer. Her family fled Russia during the revolution and settled in Paraguay, where she helped out on the farm picking cotton. She loved animals and had pet parrots, dogs, and even a deer. Louise taught herself various instruments, attended Bible school, and had a passion for sewing. She was a woman of strong faith, and married Jake Schierling in 1948, after leading him to the Lord. In 1967 they moved to Canada, where she was devoted to her family and actively involved in church choirs. She is mourned by children Irene (Heinz) Harms, Monica (George) Warkentin, Ewald (Viola) Shierling, and Carol (Glen) Monds; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 5 siblings. The memorial service was at King Road MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.

Helen Wiebe

Helen Wiebe

Helen Wiebe died Aug. 22. She was born Nov. 10, 1913 in Alexanderfeld, Ukraine to Aron and Maria Janzen. Despite Communism, she grew up in a loving home. After marrying John Wiebe in 1942, they lived in village No. 1, Zagradovka, until fleeing to Germany with the German Army in 1943. In 1948 the family moved to Coaldale, Alta., and later to farm in Chilliwack, B.C., where she was a generous host and a loving mother who accepted everyone unconditionally. She worked part-time as a janitor, and after retirement moved to Clearbrook, B.C. She is mourned by children Mary (Len) Dyck, Ann (Stewart) McIvor, Linda (Bev) Turner, and Ruth (Ron) Peters; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. The memorial service was Aug. 27 at Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.
