Delegates at ICOMB’s annual meeting in DR Congo June 17–20 agreed to rename the global organization the International Community of Mennonite Brethren. The “C” previously stood for “committee,” but members agreed that “community” better reflects ICOMB’s growing fellowship, and resonates both biblically and culturally.
Attendees heard reports from MBMS International, which provided details of an emerging group of some 30,000 members in Laos. The group of believers, already using the ICOMB Confession of Faith, is seeking official status as a Christian church in Laos. The 13 delegates developed plans for celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Mennonite Brethren movement in 2010, and announced the release of a commentary on the ICOMB Confession of Faith planned for early 2008. They hope Mennonite Brethren around the world will use the commentary, written for the average lay person, to study the shared confession. “We’ve talked about producing some books on our identity,” said executive secretary Victor Wall. “And we decided this commentary should be the first.” Elections also took place. Damien Pelende, leader of the Congo MB conference was elected vice chair. David Wiebe, leader of the Canadian MB conference was re-elected recording secretary. Chair Ernesto Wiens will continue his term. —ICOMB release
