The Danzig Mennonite Church: Its Origin and History from 1569–1919
H.G. Mannhardt, translated by Victor G. Doerksen, edited and annotated by Mark Jantzen and John D. Thiesen. Pandora Press, 2007. 286 pages. |
H.G. Mannhardt served as a pastor in the German Mennonite church 1878 to 1927. His reflections on 350 years of the Danzig (Gdansk, Poland today) Mennonite Church, first published in 1919, have now been translated and annotated. Editor Jantzen notes that this volume “presents a continuous history of urban Mennonites.” The volume includes an epilogue by Tomasz Ropiejko, who leads the Pentecostal congregation that has used the building since the 1950s.
Building Communities: The Changing Face of Manitoba Mennonites
John J. Friesen. CMU Press, 2007. 240 pages. |
John J. Friesen, professor emeritus of history and theology at Canadian Mennonite University, Winnipeg, has written a comprehensive history of the Mennonite groups in Manitoba, richly enhanced with photographs, quotations, maps, notes, and appendices. The latter range from lists of Manitoba candidates of Mennonite background who stood for election in the provincial legislature to (for those of us who can never keep them straight) a chart of divisions, including emigrations and name changes, among Mennonite groups.
