Abe Reimer
Abe Reimer died July 25, 2006 of lung cancer. He was born Sept. 12, 1937 to Abram and Maria Reimer in Zagradovka, Ukraine. He experienced the terrors of war and hunger as the family fled Russia with the retreating German army. They settled in Winnipeg, where Abe quickly learned English. In 1964, he married Linda Loewen. Abe was a natural salesman, and eventually took up bookselling, his dream career. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of books, especially the Bible, which he loved deeply. His two closest friends were men he led to Christ through his store. Abe was a charter member of McIvor Ave. MB Church. He served on many committees, was an avid sports booster, and treasured his grandchildren. He is mourned by Linda; children Lorilee (Doyle) Craker and Dan (Tina); 7 grandchildren; 5 siblings. The funeral was Aug. 1, 2006 at McIvor Ave. MB Church, Winnipeg.
Hugo W. Jantz

Hugo Jantz died Aug. 12, 2006 after a lengthy illness. Born to Henry and Lena Jantz Mar. 5, 1930, in Laird, Sask., he committed his life to Christ in 1944 and was baptized in the Laird MB Church. Hugo studied at Prairie Bible Institute, Three Hills, Alta., and Mennonite Brethren Bible College, Winnipeg, and then embarked on a lifetime of public ministry, much of it within the Mennonite Brethren church. Together with Katherine (Goerzen), whom he married in 1954, he served in Quito, Ecuador, among refugees in Germany, and as director of MCC’s European programs. He pastored churches in Yarrow, Clearbrook, and Winnipeg, and served with Columbia Bible College, MBBC, and MBMS International. Hugo’s ministry was characterized by strong personal relationships and engaging preaching; his manner was unpretentious and accepting. He never lost his conviction that following Jesus meant embracing a life of unconditional love and peacemaking. Predeceased by 2 brothers; he is mourned by Katherine; daughters Janet (Tim Kroeker), Eliana (Bob Davidson), Carol (James Waytowich), Angelika (Walter Nikkel), Marianne (Floyd Olson), Sonya (Matthew Lawrence); son Robert (Cindy Mann); 16 grandchildren; 4 siblings. The funeral was held at Sargent Mennonite Church, Winnipeg.
Katharina (Katie) Hooge
Katie Hooge died March 30. She was born in Terek, Russia, to Johann and Judy Dahl. In 1925 the family immigrated to Saskatchewan, then moved to Yarrow, B.C. in 1928. She found forgiveness and inner peace in Jesus and was baptized Aug. 9, 1931 in Yarrow MB Church. She married John P. Hooge Oct. 24, 1935. They had a dairy farm in Sardis, B.C. and were members of Greendale MB Church. Katie’s life was full and courageous, and her generous, loving ways touched many lives. Her husband John, with whom she shared joys and sorrows for 71 years, followed her in death May 15. She is mourned by children John (Ruth), Gordon (Sandy), Benjamin, Blondina Enns, Victor (Linda), Bruno (Lorraine), Clarence (Susan); 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter. The celebration of life service was April 11 at Greendale MB Church.
John Peter Hooge
John Peter Hooge died May 15, age 95. He was born to Peter H. and Maria Hooge in Klinok, Russia May 12, 1912, and immigrated to Manitoba in 1926 with his family. In 1933, they moved to B.C. John was baptized in Yarrow MB Church July 29, 1934 and married Katie Dahl Oct. 24, 1935. They farmed in Sardis, B.C., joining Greendale MB Church. John was an award-winning gardener, and also loved to play golf, which he learned at 60 and played until nearly 90. He prayed daily, served others with time and money, encouraged his family, and was an example of how to treat one’s spouse. Predeceased by Katie March 30, he is mourned by children John (Ruth), Gordon (Sandy), Benjamin, Blondina Enns, Victor (Linda), Bruno (Lorraine), Clarence (Susan); 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter. The celebration of life service was May 23 at Greendale MB Church.
Ella Nickel
Ella Nickel died peacefully April 16. She was born to Herman and Tina Nickel, Feb. 13, 1918, in Dalmeny, Sask. As the oldest child, she helped with her siblings and household activities. In 1944, the family moved to Ontario, where Ella was baptized on confession of her faith. Reading her Bible was important to her; she believed in the power of prayer. In 1999, she moved into Tabor Manor Nursing Home in St. Catharines, Ont. Ella was helpful and cheerful, and enjoyed family gatherings and monthly luncheons with her siblings. She is mourned by her family John (Elsie), Betty (Dennis) Kane, Henry (Rubina), Clarence (Joyce), Anne (Jake) Dueck, Jake (Lenie), Frank (Helen), Abe (Fran), and Carol (Nickel) Riddick. The funeral was April 19 at Grantham MB Church, St. Catharines, Ont.
Elma Schmidt
Elma Schmidt died April 26. She was born Sept. 12, 1917 to Dan and Katherine Schindel near Rush Lake, Sask. She attended Bethany Bible School, Hepburn, Sask. in 1938–39, where she met Harry Schmidt, whom she married June 13, 1943. They briefly farmed, then settled in Saskatoon. Family and church were very important to Elma. She was a wonderful cook and served her Lord in many areas. In later years there were troubling times with Alzheimer’s disease. She is mourned by Harry; children Gerald (Sophie), Donna (Merle) Moore, Doreen (Elwood) Goetz; 8 grandchildren; 2 siblings. The memorial service was May 1 at Forest Grove Community Church, Saskatoon.
Lydia Heinrichs
Lydia Heinrichs died Mar. 17. She was born Oct. 13, 1929 in Foxwarren, Man. to David and Anna Loewen. Lydia accepted Christ as a child and was baptized in Justice (Man.) MB Church as a teen. She attended Winkler Bible School, then trained as a seamstress. On June 17, 1951 Lydia married Jake Heinrichs. They farmed in Port Rowan, Ont. Lydia had a passion for quilting and organized many quilting bees. She also served on the church catering committee. A stroke in 1994 left her with many challenges but her strong faith never wavered and she continued praying for each family member by name. Predeceased by daughter Marilyn, she is mourned by Jake; children Rita (Gord) Reimer, Don (Helen), Karen (Larry) Wiebe, Larry (Charlotte), Janet (Norm) Martens, Kelly (Debbie); 26 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 6 siblings. The funeral was Mar. 21 at Port Rowan MB Church.
Elizabeth Thiessen
Elizabeth Thiessen died April 18, age 99. She was born in Nikolaidorf, Russia, June 15, 1907, to Peter and Elizabeth Thielmann. She later often recalled the trauma she experienced during the years of revolution and war in Russia. The family immigrated to Herbert, Sask. in 1925. Elizabeth married Peter J. Thiessen Nov. 6, 1927 and they farmed in the Greenfarm, Sask. district until 1965, when they moved to Herbert. Peter’s death in a farm accident in 1970 was very difficult for her. Elizabeth taught herself to read and she read many books. She also pursued many hobbies. Her life was an example of faith and love. Predeceased by Peter, she is mourned by sons Walter (Wilma), Alfred (Alvina), Clarence (Elsie); 9 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was April 21 at Herbert MB Church.
Annie E. Dyck Buhler
Annie E. Dyck Buhler died peacefully Mar. 16 after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Winkler, Man. to Jacob and Bertha Dyck, and at an early age felt called by God to be a missionary. In 1945, Annie was ordained and left for mission service in Colombia where she worked for many years, training church leaders and teaching people of all ages in a variety of settings. She took a BA in Spanish, then served further in Texas, Panama, and Colombia. In retirement, Annie found a partner in Sam Buhler, and gained children and grandchildren. She was a loving friend and family member, a committed Christian leader, and a faithful follower of Jesus. Predeceased by Sam in 2001; she is mourned by children Sandra (Vern) Loewen, Larry (Marilyn), Sharlene (Brian) Craig; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 siblings. The celebration of life service was Mar. 19 at Forest Grove Community Church, Saskatoon.
Ralph Boyd Staples
Ralph Boyd Staples died May 4. He was born in Maisfield, Sask., Mar. 18, 1935, to Stan and Ella Staples. On Nov. 24, 1961, he married Linda, the love of his life. He farmed in the Hays, Alta. area from 1952 to 1961, then worked as custodian at St. Patrick’s School in Taber, Alta. In 1998, after attending a church service in Coaldale, Alta., Ralph accepted Christ as his Saviour and became a joyful follower of Christ. Soon after, he and Linda were baptized and joined the Coaldale MB Church. He enjoyed sports, camping, and spending time with his grandchildren. Predeceased by 1 brother, he is mourned by Linda; children Brenda Wiebe, Sherry (Lance) Unser, Darryl (Krista); 8 grandchildren; 1 brother. The funeral service was May 8 at Coaldale MB Church.
Henry Letkeman
Henry Letkeman died peacefully Apr. 16 at 92. He was born Oct. 7, 1914 to George and Anna Letkeman in Kelstern, Sask. and attended Bethany Bible School, Hepburn, Sask. 3 years. Henry resided in Great Deer, Mullingar, Martensville (for 52 years) and Langham. He was baptized in the Borden (Great Deer) MB Church and later joined the Warman MB Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher and superintendent. Predeceased by his wife Helen in 2000; 1 daughter; 2 siblings; he is mourned by children Elaine (Henry) Friesen, Ervin (Bev), Robert (Deb), Darlene (Brian) Sperling; 13 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; siblings. The funeral was Apr. 22 at Langham Bible Church.
Jakob (Jake) Isaak
Jake Daniel Isaak died May 7. He was born Mar. 14, 1968 to Daniel and Elisabeth Isaak in Kirgistan, Russia. The family immigrated to Winnipeg in 1974. At 10, Jake gave his life to God. He recommitted his life to God in 1992 and was baptized at Central MB Church, returning to his home church, North Kildonan MB Church, in 1998. Jake had many friends and a mischievous sense of humour. He worked at Monarch Industries 10 years, as a CNC machine operator. In 1994, Jake was diagnosed with Huntingtons disease, as his father and oldest brother had been before him. Through their deaths and his own adversities, Jake remained cheerful, generous, kind, and spiritually strong. He moved into Tache Center in 2003. Predeceased by his father in 1984, brother Greg in 1998; he is mourned by his loving mother Elisabeth; brothers John and Henry (Angie); sister Helen (Victor); 6 nieces and nephews. The funeral was May 11 at North Kildonan MB Church.
Arnold Prieb
Arnold Prieb died May 4. He was born in Buhler, Kan. Feb. 6, 1924 to Peter J. and Mary Prieb. He married Rosella Koop Sept. 21, 1945 and they went to DR Congo as missionaries in 1950, working in evangelism, church planting, and leadership training for 30 years. Arnold was the first elected president of the MB church of Congo. After returning to the U.S., he was associate pastor at Bethany MB Church, Fresno, Cal. for 12 years, served on conference boards, and visited Congo 8 times to encourage the believers. He had a deep faith, a pioneering spirit, boundless energy, and a love of music. He said, “My service for my Lord were the best years of my life.” Predeceased by an infant daughter, he is mourned by Rosella, children Gloria Enns, Garry, Larry, Arnie, and James; 18 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 brother. The memorial service was May 11 at Bethany MB Church.
Mary Florence Peters
Mary Peters died peacefully May 4, age 90. She was born Oct. 25, 1916 in Stepanowka, Russia, to Heinrich and Aganetha Brucks. She accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour in her early years. The family immigrated to Canada in 1926. Mary was baptized in Coaldale, Alta. in 1931. She took teacher training and taught for 3 years. On Aug. 8, 1954, she married Jacob Peters. They lived various places, following Jacob’s teaching career, but by 1960 had settled in Clearbrook, B.C. where they joined the Clearbrook MB Church. Mary loved to sing with her family and served the church in choirs and Sunday school. She walked daily, never ceased praying, and loved Psalm 23. She is mourned by Jacob; children Joyce (Gerald) Loeppky, Henry (Karen), Don (Madoka), Dave (Connie), Laurie, Ken (Melinda); 16 grandchildren. The celebration of life service was May 10 at Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford.
Maria Penner
Maria Penner died May 7. She was born Nov. 9, 1915. The celebration of life service was May 14 at Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.
Edward DeFehr
Edward Elmer DeFehr died peacefully May 9 of cancer. He was born Aug. 11, 1920 to Frank and Lena DeFehr in Main Centre, Sask. and married Laura Penner Aug. 30, 1942. They lived in Sudbury, Ont. while he worked at International Nickel as part of the war effort, then moved back to Main Centre in 1943 and on to Abbotsford, B.C. in 1947. Ed owned and operated a trucking business until 1955, then worked 28 years for B.C. Hydro. During retirement, Ed and Laura travelled, fished, gardened, and spent time with their family. Predeceased by 2 daughters, 1 great-grandson, 3 siblings; he is mourned by Laura; children Marilyn (Gerry) Bruce, Dianne (Rudy) Schroeder, Daryl; son-in-law Ray Peters; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren. The celebration of life service was May 16 at Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.
Mary Loewen
Mary (Plett) Loewen died February 19. She was born June 20, 1915 in Trubetskoi, Russia and came to Canada at age 10, living first in Hochfeld, Man., then Morden, Man. As a teenager, she worked as a domestic in Winnipeg. In September 1940, she married David Loewen. The couple farmed in Newton, Man., where they joined and participated in Newton MB Church. In 1974, they moved to Winnipeg, joining Portage Ave. Church. Mary’s hands were seldom idle. She loved to have people over and to make gifts from her knitting, crocheting, and quilting. Predeceased by David, she is mourned by daughters Irene and Anne; sons David and Peter; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. The memorial service was Feb. 23 at Portage Ave. Church.
Rudy Fast
Rudy Fast died peacefully Feb. 25, on his 46th wedding anniversary. He was born July 20, 1932 in Winnipeg, Man. The loss of his parents during his childhood profoundly affected him during his youth. Rudy became a teacher. He loved his students, and was both mentor and teacher to them. In 1961, he married Adelheid Martens. In 1964, he was baptized upon confession of his faith at North Kildonan MB Church, Winnipeg. Rudy retired after 30 years teaching, but continued giving driving instruction in the R. Fast School of Driving. He enjoyed cars and sports, served many years in the diaconate, and was a devoted and loving father and grandfather. He is mourned by Adelheid; son Rudie F.; daughters Carla Janzen (Rheal Landry); Marlene Penner (Charles); Verena Betzing (Uwe); 10 grandchildren; 5 siblings. The funeral was Mar. 1 at North Kildonan MB Church.
