Cooking up a blessing

Previous | Next

“As far as we know, this is the only Low German cookbook in the world,” says Helen Funk, Family Life Network German radio producer, who created the full-colour Met Helen en de Kyaakj (In the Kitchen with Helen), featuring more than 100 recipes, along with proverbs, prayers, and encouragements.

Funk produced the cookbooks to distribute at a Bolivian Bible school she and her husband Jacob were teaching at in June. When she visited two years ago, she found that none of the women attending their workshops on marriage, parenting, and community building, had a cookbook.

Although many of the women cannot read, their school-aged daughters read the recipes for them. The family-oriented cookbook “will strengthen the bond between mothers and daughters,” she says.

The books will also be sent to radio stations, missionaries, and bookstores in Mexico, Paraguay, Germany, and Canada. Funk has already begun work on a second volume.
