Arnold Braun

Arnold Braun

Arnold Braun died peacefully Sept. 15. He was born Aug. 20, 1932 in Turnhill, Sask. to John and Helen Braun. Music was a large part of Arnold’s heritage. This included playing mandolin and harmonica, and singing in male quartets, choirs, and at family gatherings. He accepted the Lord as his Saviour and was baptized at 18. While attending Herbert Bible School, Arnold met Hulda Redekop and they were married Aug. 23, 1953. They moved to Swift Current, Sask., where Arnold started a construction company. Yearly trips were taken to many locations in North America. Arnold enjoyed coin collecting, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and reading. He was a great storyteller, had a zest for life, and provided wise counsel. He lived out his faith as a man of integrity in the business community. Arnold served on various church and conference committees, and was a prayer warrior. Predeceased by an infant son; 1 brother; 1 sister; he is mourned by Hulda; children Barbara (John) Doerksen, Kerry (Sheila), and Leanne (Ken) McConnell; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters; 6 brothers. The funeral was Sept. 19 at Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current.

Jake Doerksen

Jake Doerksen died Sept. 20, hand in hand with his wife. He was born Feb. 1924 in Nikoleifeld, Russia just months before his family crossed the ocean to Canada. In 1929, they settled in Winnipeg, where Jake grew up and committed his life to the Lord. He became a spiritual help to his younger brothers. After working for Watkins Products and Henderson Directories, Jake became a teacher. He taught in Winkler, Man. and Winnipeg. Jake also taught the children of the Canadian Armed Forces in Germany. In Aug. 1974, he married Marjorie Drebert and became a loving father to her two teenage sons. Jake and Marjorie loved music and sang in choirs. Jake enjoyed keeping in touch with his siblings and their families, travelling across Canada to visit them. He is mourned by Marjorie and her sons Jim (Roz) and Doug (Marilyn), and grandchildren Mark, Paul, Michael, and Brian; 2 sisters; 4 brothers; 15 nieces and nephews. The memorial service was Sept. 26 at Bakerview MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.

John W. Martens

John W. Martens

John Martens died Feb. 21 in his sleep. He was born July 9, 1918 in Warman, Sask. He moved to Manitoba as a teenager to find employment. For the majority of his working years, he farmed near Kleefeld. He also worked at Pioneer Electric in Winnipeg and Keystone Hatchery in Niverville. John had a strong work ethic. He enjoyed good health most of his life, but suffered several strokes in later years and had to move to a nursing home. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up, watching WWF wrestling, and playing guitar. John was a quiet, private man, and liked to be punctual. Predeceased by 2 sisters; 4 brothers; 2 grandchildren; he is mourned by Katherine, his wife of 61 years; children Ed (Tina), Irene (Dan) Pauls, Walter (Sandra), Harold (Kathy), Art (Carol), and Val; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

William Isaak Neufeld

William Isaak Neufeld

William Isaak Neufeld died Aug. 22 at age 97. He was born Nov. 10, 1908 in Waldheim, Russia to Isaak and Anna Neufeld. He attended the village school until the revolution. His schooling was interrupted again and again as his parents moved from place to place. William’s family immigrated to Canada in 1926. At 7, William made a commitment to Jesus at an evangelistic meeting. In Winnipeg, he recommitted his life to God and was baptized. He married Hildegard Neufeld in 1941. William became a teacher and taught at Mennonite Educational Institute, Clearbrook, B.C., for 13 years. In 1959, he was ordained as a minister and became pastor of South Abbotsford (B.C.) MB Church. In 1966, he moved back to Winnipeg and pastored at North Kildonan MB Church. After retirement at age 70, he kept busy preaching, travelling, and writing books. He enjoyed visits from his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Predeceased by Hildegard; 1 great-grandson; he is mourned by children Ingrid, Karin (Herb Suderman), Wili (Jack Bass), and Gerald (Ellen); 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren. The celebration of life service was Aug. 24 at North Kildonan MB Church.

Reuben Isaac Harms

Reuben Isaac Harms

Reuben Harms died Aug. 14. He was born Nov. 26, 1929 in Waldheim, Sask. to Arnold and Anna Harms. When he was 4, the family moved to Glenbush, Sask. to farm. Reuben married Sarah Neufeld in 1954. He had an appreciation for nature, enjoyed camping, was a great mechanic, and worked at several dealerships. He and Sarah were founding members of North Battleford (Sask.) Mennonite Church and later attended Territorial Drive Alliance Church. Reuben enjoyed teaching Bible studies. He was forced into early retirement after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In 2003, he moved to Waldheim Westview Pioneer Lodge and attended the local MB church. In his testimony, he shared about difficult times, but also a growing closeness to God. Predeceased by Sarah in 2001; 1 brother; 1 sister; he is mourned by daughters Debbie (Brian) Cooper, Brenda Manning, and Charlotte; 7 grandchildren; 1 brother; 3 sisters. The funeral was Aug. 17 at Waldheim MB Church.

Margaret Enns

Margaret Enns

Margaret Enns died Sept. 22. She was born May 6, 1926 in Coaldale, Alta. to John and Katherine Enns. She had the distinction of being the first Mennonite child born in the town. Margaret gave her heart to Jesus at an early age. Later she experienced renewal and was baptized, joining the Coaldale MB Church. Margaret enjoyed studying at Coaldale Bible School, Winnipeg Bible College, and the University of Alberta. She spent 20 years in India, teaching at a British boarding school and Shamshabad MB Bible School. She loved and appreciated the Indian people. Margaret’s last years were difficult due to her battle with Alzheimer’s disease, but God remained faithful. Predeceased by 6 sisters; 4 brothers; 1 nephew; 1 niece; 1 great-nephew; she is mourned by sister Susie; sisters-in-law Mary Schmidt and Margaret Enns; nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at Coaldale MB Church.

Katherine (Tena) Walde

Katherine (Tena) Walde

Tena Walde died peacefully May 12 after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 17, 1918 in Siberia. Her faith and family were most important to her. Tena was organized, independent, and had a quiet, calming spirit. Tena was a beautiful seamstress and taught sewing classes in Chilliwack, B.C. She enjoyed travelling, cooking, and baking. Her grandchildren will miss her cookies. Predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Peter; 1 brother; 1 great-granddaughter; she is mourned by daughter Doris (Walt) Wiebe; son Rudy (De Vee); 4 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters. The memorial service was May 24 at Broadway Church, Chilliwack.

Katherine Klassen

Katherine Klassen

Katherine Klassen died June 23 with her sisters at her side. She was born Nov. 14, 1932 in Russia to Frank and Aganetha Klassen. Katherine lived with her mother until her mother’s death in 1993. Her father died in Russia in 1962. Katherine enjoyed helping at the thrift store, and cutting squares for quilts. She also loved reading the Bible. She was a loving, gifted, and longsuffering person. She is mourned by sisters Mary (Henry) Wiebe and Louise (Jake) Dyck; brother John (Elma); aunt Katherine Warkentin; nieces and nephews.

Arnold Schroeder & Doreen Schroeder

Arnold Schroeder & Doreen Schroeder

Arnold Schroeder, 75, and his wife Doreen (Siemens) Schroeder, 71, of Winnipeg died Aug. 20 in an accident on U.S. Highway 51 while travelling to a Christian conference in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are mourned by their children Orla (David) Nicholas, Russ (Carol), Stuart (Betsy), and Jon; 8 grandchildren. The memorial service was Aug. 26 at Springs Church, Winnipeg.
