Tiena (Kay) Thiessen 
|
Kay Thiessen died June 26. She was born in Tiege, Russia Apr. 29, 1919 to Heinrich and Katharina Penner. When she was 5, Kay’s family immigrated to Canada and settled in Saskatchewan. At 19, Kay was baptized and joined Blumenort (Sask.) MB Church. She married William (Bill) Thiessen Oct. 19, 1940. In 1944, after several years of crop failure on their farm, the family moved to Chilliwack, B.C., where Kay supported Bill in his weekly live radio program. In 1959, they moved back to the prairies for pastoral ministry, where Kay’s gifts of hospitality and encouragement flourished. They then took on a 10-year assignment with MBMS International in Durango, Mexico to establish a church in the Mennonite colony. Kay taught Sunday school, mentored women, and learned to drive a pickup truck. Kay and Bill retired in Canada in 1983. Kay used the last 23 years of her life to serve her church, friends, and family. She was an award-winning crocheter. Her most treasured, lasting legacy is her daily prayers for her family. She is mourned by Bill; children Marilyn (Peter) Baerg, Robert (Jean), Herb (Nancy), Rick (Aldene); 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 4 siblings. The celebration of life service was June 30 at Clearbrook MB Chuch, Abbotsford, B.C.
Katharina Schmidt

Katharina Schmidt died July 21. She was born in Aliesowa, Russia Apr. 23, 1914 to Peter and Susanna Krieger. Bible reading, prayer, and singing were an important part of the family’s life. She attended Sunday school as long as communist authorities permitted. At 9, she accepted Christ. Katharina worked on a collective farm for 10 years where labour was hard, food often inadequate, hours long. She remained true to her faith, even though many denied it. She married Gerhard Schmidt in 1940. He was taken away by authorities only a year later and died the following May. In 1947, Katharina was baptized and became a member of the MB Church in Bavaria. Katharina and her daughter lived in Germany and Paraguay, then settled in Abbotsford, B.C. in 1952. Katharina worked in the berry fields, and enjoyed her garden, knitting, and the Maranatha ladies’ fellowship. Predeceased by Gerhard; 4 brothers; 3 sisters; she is mourned by daughter Katie; sisters Agate, Eliesabeth, Sara, and Mariechen; brother Johann; nephews and nieces. The memorial service was July 27 at Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.
Eva Schartner
Eva Schartner died July 21. She was born Nov. 26, 1918 in Swalwell, Alta. She married Tobe Schartner Aug. 2, 1938. Eva was a homemaker and mother. When Tobe gave his life to Jesus, he anxiously shared his experience with Eva. Realizing her need for the Lord, Eva followed in Tobe’s footsteps. The family lived in Three Hills, Alta. while Tobe attended Prairie Bible Institute and then served on staff. In 1971, they moved to Kelowna, B.C., where they stayed until 1996, when they returned to Linden. Predeceased by Tobe; 16 siblings; she is mourned by sons Dellan (Edith), Ray (Vivian), Tim (Ida), and Randy (Jewel); daughters Alma-Jean (Bud) Peters, Dawn (John) Sparreboom; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 brother.
Peter James Peters

Peter James Peters died peacefully Aug. 10. He was born Apr. 30, 1921 in Plum Coulee, Man. to James and Agnes Peters. At 14, he left home to work as a farmhand. When he was 20, he met Kay Penner, who was only 14. Peter attended Kay’s baptism, which made a significant impact on him. One Sunday morning at age 25, Peter’s car wouldn’t start so he walked to a church several miles away. At this church, he was convicted to become a Christian. Shortly afterwards, Peter and Kay were married. Peter worked at various vocations, including trucking and concrete finishing, and took pride in his workmanship. Peter and Kay attended Elmwood MB Church, Winnipeg, where Peter served as an usher. He believed in regular church involvement and respect for church leadership. In 1967, they moved to Abbotsford, B.C. and became members of Bakerview MB Church, where they served on the food committee. Peter enjoyed retirement and spending time with his family. Predeceased by 2 brothers, he is mourned by Kay; 4 children and their spouses; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters. The memorial service was Aug. 17 at Bakerview MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.
George Richards
George Richards died Aug. 4. He was born Nov. 18, 1915 in Winnipeg to Samuel and Susanna Richards, the second youngest of 7 children. George owned and operated Richards Electric in Vancouver, and was known as a fair and honest businessman. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Vancouver, and then Bakerview MB Church in Abbotsford. He is mourned by Luella, his loving wife of more than 66 years; children Sharolyn (Joe) and Donald (Vivian); grandchildren; great-grandchildren. The celebration of life service was Aug. 18 at Emerson Park Estates Clubhouse in Abbotsford, B.C.
Esther M. Fredlund

Esther M. Fredlund died peacefully Aug. 24 with her children at her bedside. She was born Sept. 22, 1910 in Norquay, Sask. to August and Anna Ham. In grade 9, Esther came to an understanding of the importance of spiritual matters. After hearing a message from an evangelist, she invited Jesus Christ into her heart and committed her life to following God. After high school, Esther attended Bible school in Minnedosa, where a romance with her future husband blossomed. She married George Fredlund Nov. 3, 1934 and they lived on the same farm where Esther was born. In 1991, George and Esther moved to Lanigan, Sask. In her late 80s, Esther made the decision to be baptized. She desired that everyone she met would come to know Jesus. Esther will be remembered for her love of the Lord, her love and applause of family, and her desire to help others. Predeceased by George in 2000; daughter Doreen; 1 brother; she is mourned by children Del (JoAnne), Veryl (John) Wylie, Lorne (Peg), and Marlene (Dave) Pollock; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Aug. 27 at Christian Fellowship Church, Lanigan, Sask.
Bernhard W. Rempel

Bernhard W. (Ben) Rempel died July 14. He was born Sept. 16, 1916 to Wilhelm and Margaretha Rempel in Gruenfeld, Russa. At 6, he immigrated with his family to Canada. At 12, Ben accepted Christ as Saviour. In 1943, he married Anna Penner. Ben was actively involved in the Domain (Man.) MB Church, where he taught Sunday school and sang in the male chorus. He loved farming, and remained optimistic and thankful during all his years as a farmer in Osborne, Man. In 1984, he retired and moved to Winnipeg, where he made new friends and encouraged international students. Ben was blessed with many friends throughout his life, thanks to his generous and outgoing nature. Many of these friendships continue through the third generation of family members. Predeceased by daughter Barbara Anna; 4 brothers; 5 sisters; Ben in mourned by Anna; daughters Margaret (Art) Koop and Carla (Rod) Muller; son Paul (Ruth); 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren. The funeral service was July 18 at Portage Ave. MB Church, Winnipeg.
Edward Jacob Wall
Edward Jacob Wall died peacefully Sept. 2. He was born Oct. 22, 1940 to Ted and Helen Wall. Ed attended school in Longford, Swift Current, and Wymark, Sask. In his grade 12 year, he met Lucille. They were married June 1961. After graduation, Ed attended Bethany Bible Institute for 1 year and then farmed. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and working in his shop. He was proud of his family and looked forward to any occasion that would bring them together. Ed gave his life to Christ as a child and was baptized on the confession of his faith in 1961. He attended Bridgeway Community Church, Swift Current, and served there in various ways, including volunteering many hours in the construction of two church buildings. He also served in the community on several boards. He is mourned by Lucille; children Rhonda (Darrin) Dueck, Joyce (Chuck) Mohamed, and Randolph; 7 grandchildren; 1 brother; 3 sisters. The funeral was Sept. 5 at Bridgeway Community Church.
