The generation of parents raised on watching television sees little wrong in exposing their own children to various electronic media, according to a study by the California-based Kaiser Family Foundation. It found that 83 percent of children under 6 typically spend about 2 hours a day watching TV, videos, or DVDs, playing video games, or using the computer. Media use rises as the children get older. Parents said they believe television “mostly helps” their children learn, frees the adults, is a “reward” for good behaviour, and helps kids wind down at bedtime.
The findings were unexpected. Instead of “parents trying to keep their finger in the dam,” lead researcher Victoria Rideout found “enthusiasm and tremendous lack of concern” over media use.
