Question of faith

If you knew God would answer . . . what would you ask?

Postcards to God, a project initiated by Family Life Network’s GodTalk team, invites Canadians to give voice to their spiritual wonderings, whether those are “personal, playful, or profound.”

Headed by David Balzer and Melissa McEachern, co-hosts of GodTalk radio (heard Sunday evenings on a Winnipeg radio station), the team has been distributing postcards at live events and through direct mail.

The project is the first phase of a new interactive websiteOutside link featuring podcasts, live chat, contests, and video.

Balzer and McEachern say they have been stunned by the depth and intimacy of the responses.

“The majority have been asking God the classic question of ‘why suffering?’ ” says McEachern, “but there is something greater going on: people are personalizing it.”

A response such as one ranting at God for being “a miserable failure” (see postcards at right) isn’t easy to read, says Balzer, “but it’s worth listening to.”

For our listening – and pondering – here are some of the postcards to God.

Where did you find the plan to the universe? What did you do before you made the world?

—Bekah, 14

Why can’t my parents accept me for who I am?

—Crystal, 19

Why did my brother die?

—David, 40

When will my husband love me and God?

—Joan, 51

Dus hevan have a water slid?

—Kezia, 6

When will I get married and to whom?

—Sam, 40

Why not make everyone equal? Physically, financially, spiritually, psychologically?

—Mariano, 14

Please God, let me get well.

—Gail, 68

If you are more powerful than Satan, why don’t you just destroy him?

—Janessa, 14

What really happened to the dinosaurs, and when?

—Grant, 38

God, am I to ask for healing for my illness? Or the strength to cope with it?

—Melissa, 26

Why the mess?

—Gerald, 51

The pregnancy that I lost – was it a boy or a girl? Who would the baby have looked like?

—Angeline, 32

Am I going to heaven . . . or hell, and when will I die?

—Anneka, 15

Who can we trust?

—Mike, 14

That my family would all be saved, including my grandchildren.

—Pete, 83

Why do you communicate with many, but leave others in the dark, left to wander and wonder if you exist?

—Kendra, 30

God, why do you allow some of your children to become disabled?

—Terrance, 46

Why are there so many wars and unrest on the planet Earth? For eons!

—Orest, 70

Will you forgive me?

—Julia, 15

I was wondering, if you are all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-loving . . . why are you such a miserable failure at everything you attempt? You screwed up the first time and had to commit global genocide to fix it . . . and nothing was fixed. You send your only son to pay for our sin . . . yet here we are sinners and we are not forgiven. . . .

—Mike, 38
