You, Me and Who? 5-Minute Devotionals for You and Your Date

Emily Parke Chase. Kindred ProductionsOutside link, 2006.

This book contains some 26 devotionals for teenaged couples, covering a range of topics from A to Z. They begin with “accountability,” then walk through many issues couples deal with such as boundaries, respect, patience, values, future plans, and end with “ZZZZZ . . . why not sleep together?” Each devotional contains a short story, two or three discussion questions, a date idea, and a prayer.

Each devotional seeks to challenge the reader’s walk with God and to open avenues of communication with their date. It leaves room for discussion, acknowledging that they are in the discovery process of their relationship, on an adventure together, growing personally and with each other. Chase suggests that putting God at the centre of the relationship will help the couple in the direction God is calling them.

These topics need to be discussed. I found the date ideas uneven, ranging from creative to unrealistic, but the idea of meshing conversation and activities is a helpful one. This book is probably best suited for those who are at an early stage in their relationship, specifically couples in their mid-teens, who are still exploring what it means to be a Christian and dating.
