Speaking of grace
The annual spring concert of Lendrum MB Church, Edmonton, held June 5, featured renowned storyteller Jack Dueck of Waterloo, Ont. Originally from Coaldale, Alta., the former professor of literature at Goshen (Ind.) College, enjoys telling stories that weave together ironic and humorous aspects of Christian life, using them to exemplify grace. The stories, which reporter Sandra Epp says were like “mini-sermons,” were interspersed with beautiful choir music.
The end of this mortgage
The Justice (Man.) MB Church held a mortgage burning ceremony June 4 for the new sanctuary added in 2000 to the foyer, office, and Sunday school rooms built in 1980. Manitoba conference minister Keith Poysti participated in the ceremony, along with former building committee members. Justice MB Church celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2005.
50 years in Calgary
Highland MB Church, Calgary, celebrated 50 years June 3–4. Built around the theme “50 Years Linked Together by His Grace,” the weekend included an outreach breakfast and a banquet featuring Jacob Froese, the missionary who gathered Mennonite Brethren in Calgary in the early 1950s, as keynote speaker. Froese urged his audience not to forget the vision of those who founded Highland in 1956. Former pastors and members shared their memories.
Sunday morning, current pastor Rob Reimer and Fred Stoesz of Evangelism Canada looked into the future, once more urging that the vision of Highland not be forgotten. (A history book and CDs or tapes of the services are available for purchase from the church, 4018 Centre B Street, Calgary, AB T2K 0W2.)
