Helping parents help their teens

An idea for: Youth leaders

Previous | Next

Most youth leaders know the culture of teens, but how can they help parents with it, in order to help their children?

Walt Mueller, founder and president of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, suggests:

  1. let parents know you are going to shoot straight with them about the real issues facing their kids;
  2. encourage parents to use the knowledge you’re sharing in ways that are both preventive (preparing kids for what to avoid) and prophetic (proclaiming God’s truth about issues);
  3. be their “advance scout” and pass on everything you learn about youth culture and resources;
  4. teach parents how to help their kids develop skills for evaluating what they encounter.
