A new girls’ tour from Family Life Network (FLN) in Winnipeg has churches full of pajama-clad teenagers popping marshmallows on pink shag rugs. The goal? To replace the “not good enough” message girls get from movies and magazines with the “fearfully and wonderfully made” truth from Psalm 139.
Response has been staggering! Since launching in November, more than 26 churches in Manitoba have held a Beautiful Unique Girls (BUG) event and more are booked for 2006. During the event, women speakers evaluate society’s negative messages and teach girls they are designed and embraced by God. The idea, says Marshall Zacharias, president of Avante Records, grew around Amanda Falk, an Avante Records recording artist and winner of the 2005 Shai “Female Vocalist of the Year” award. The girls can have a close-up encounter with Amanda and follow up with their questions by e-mail. Leader Malynda Zacharias says, “One after another, youth pastors have expressed a need for an event like this one to minister exclusively to girls on girls’ issues.” Vi Siemens, youth sponsor in Newton, says, “I was so impressed with your team of women who do this night after night and still treat the girls like they are the only ones in the world. It was so good to see there were no ‘egos’ present, only women who want to see young girls get the message.” The team is building towards an all-girls conference in the spring entitled The Glass Slipper, designed around the Cinderella theme.
