In November, Bethany College became the third Christian college in Canada to receive national program recognition for their TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate program, alongside B.C.’s Trinity Western University and Manitoba’s Providence College and Seminary. The accreditation process by TESOL Canada is lengthy and involved. “Over the past three years, our program was designed and written to ensure excellence in teacher training, both in theory and skill development, while maintaining the college’s mandate and focus on ministry,” says Jean Campbell, Bethany’s TESOL director. Thanks to unique partnerships with the University of Saskatchewan, local churches and the Saskatoon Open Door Society (SODS), Bethany’s TESOL program recruited learners who attended classes and participated in practicum experiences while receiving supervised feedback. National recognition not only provides Bethany’s program wider acceptance across Canada, but also gives students pursuing international opportunities credentials that open doors in both long and short-term ministry. The need for skilled teachers of English as a second language is increasing in Canada as the numbers of refugees and immigrants increase. —Bethany College release
