Working at our mission through six services

Previous | Next

The mission of the Canadian MB Conference is “healthy growing churches reaching their worlds.”

The Executive Board of the conference anticipates working toward this mission through six strategic services. These will be carried out for churches under the guidance of David Wiebe (executive director), Cam Rowland (director of church health and communications), Ewald Unruh (director of leadership development and Evangelism Canada), and John Wiebe (chief financial officer) and their staff.

Six services

The services, their goals, and the director who relates to the service are as follows:

  1. Upholding biblical and ethical integrity – Board of Faith and Life (David Wiebe)
    • To call churches to adherence to the Confession of Faith and sound biblical practices as communities of faith.
  2. Mobilizing financial ministries – Financial Ministries (John Wiebe)
    • Ensure fiduciary responsibilities are aligned and in order.
    • Strategically allocate financial resources.
    • Strategically maximize financial opportunities and resources for greatest long-term kingdom impact.
  3. Fostering community – Communications (Cam Rowland)
    • Focus communication efforts and events toward mission, leadership, confession and ethnic inclusion.
    • To rethink our communication strategy so that churches of the conference sense a greater connection to each other and the larger body of churches across Canada and the worldwide Mennonite Brethren fellowship.
  4. Equipping churches – Church Health (Cam Rowland)
    • Focus resources (people, programs, finances) to facilitate pastoral and church health and effectiveness.
  5. Developing leaders – Leadership Development (Ewald Unruh)
    • Develop an integrated (churches, agencies, schools, etc.) leadership development strategy to raise up pastors, church leaders, cross-cultural workers and church planters.
  6. Reaching out – Evangelism Canada (Ewald Unruh)
    • Develop and implement a strategy to cultivate a multiplication mindset in our churches and ministries.
    • To move church planting efforts from primarily denominationally-driven programs toward church-based multiplication initiatives.

Staff and ministry changes

With the governance structure changes and the Executive Board choosing the six strategic services, some ministry transitions are taking place. Discipleship Ministries and age level ministries will no longer exist, as their former mandates are spread throughout the six services. Sharon Johnson (adult ministry) will continue in a resourcing role, Sherryl Koop (youth ministry) is in conversation regarding a new role of developing young leaders, and Bruce Elwood (children’s ministry) will not be continuing.

David Wiebe will give direction to all six service areas and staff of the Canadian Conference of MB Churches. One of Wiebe’s priorities will be his role as ex officio member of the Board of Faith and Life, ensuring that our focus remains clear, confessional and biblical. He will also give leadership to national events such as Gathering and the Pastors’ Orientation.

This diagram demonstrates how our six strategic services function together in targeting our mission. The arrow consists of the services of equipping churches (EC), developing leaders (DL) and reaching out (RO). Guiding the arrow are the services of upholding biblical and ethical integrity (UBEI), fostering community (FC) and mobilizing financial resources (MFM).

At Gathering 2004, delegates approved a new model for governing Mennonite Brethren conference ministries. In the months following, we worked toward implementing a new structure, using a strategic planning survey to ask questions from churches and members.

The survey results were processed at the historic final Council of Boards in January 2005. From there the Executive Board developed six strategic services for our churches across Canada. After identifying the six strategic services, the Executive Board developed strategic goals, giving focused direction to our national staff so they can work at developing tactical plans within each service. (Please see the six strategic areas and their goals as outlined above.)

The Executive Board believes this refocused effort will provide greater resourcing and effective ministry for our churches from coast to coast. Please pray for the board and staff as we seek God’s guidance in leading the Canadian Conference of MB Churches into increasingly effective ministry.
