Claudia Wall
Claudia Wall died June 21. She was born Aug. 18, 1925 to Fred and Nell Hall in Owensboro, Kent. The family moved to Akron, Ohio. She was baptized in a Baptist church. She married Russell Overfield. He died in 1991. She remarried, and was widowed in 1997. She married Frank Wall of Tillsonburg, Ont. May 2, 2000. She is mourned by Frank; 3 sons; 1 daughter; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers; 1 sister; numerous stepchildren and grandchildren. The funeral was June 25 in Stow, Ohio with John Hammell ministering.
Katherine (Kay) Braun
Katherine Braun died July 5. She was born Dec. 24, 1912 to Jakob Heinrik and Mary Rempel in Eichenfeld, Ukraine. The family immigrated to Canada in 1923, settling in Herbert, Sask. At age 18 she moved to Vancouver to work as a cook for wealthy families so she could send money home. Weekends were spent at the Maedchenheim and church. She married Nick Braun in Penticton in 1938. They farmed on Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. She was spirited, outgoing and had strong opinions. She loved guests and enjoyed cooking, and sharing her garden produce. She knit for her children and for the Red Cross and MCC. She shared her faith and volunteered in church. They travelled to many countries. She cared for Nick after he developed Parkinson’s disease. Predeceased by Nick in 1992, she is mourned by sons Peter and Nick; 4 grandchildren.
Mary Pauls
Mary Pauls died Apr. 30. She was born July 22, 1911 in Wisenfeld, South Russia. At 14 she immigrated to Lena, Man. with her family. She attended Winkler Bible School for 4 years. On July 26, 1944 she married Aron Pauls. They farmed in Osborne, Man. She taught Sunday school in Domain MB Church. In 1977, after Aron’s death, she moved to Winnipeg, where she attended North Kildonan MB Church. She was a woman of deep faith and prayer. Her favourite Scriptures were Psalm 121 and Psalm 103. She travelled to Russia, Germany, Scandinavia, Palm Springs and Florida. After suffering a stroke, she moved to Donwood Personal Care Home. She was grateful for the care she received. Predeceased by Aron, 1 granddaughter, 2 brothers, she is mourned by daughter Linda Oakley; son John; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; 1 sister. The funeral was May 5 in North Kildonan MB Church with Roland Marsch and George Klassen ministering.
Margaret Peters Toews
Margaret Peters Toews died Mar. 29. She was born Sept. 26, 1910 to Maria and Johann Peters of Friedensfeld, Russia. In 1924 the family emigrated to Herbert, Sask., where she worked for relatives. In 1929 she moved to Winnipeg. She was baptized, joining the MB church. She took cooking classes, a trade she followed for the rest of her life. In 1930 she joined her parents in B.C., working in private homes, colleges and various institutions. In 1960 she moved to California. She married widower Henry Toews. They lived in Plinada, Fresno and Clovis and enjoyed travelling in their motor home. Henry died in 1978. Nieces and nephews attending Fresno Pacific College and MB Biblical Seminary enjoyed her home-cooked meals. Her signature was driving around in a giant Cadillac that she and Henry had shared. In 1990 she moved to Clearbrook, B.C., where she continued to minister to others. The funeral was Apr. 2 in Columbia Bible College with James Toews ministering.
John Robert Martens

John Robert Martens died June 6. He was born May 19, 1911 in Rueckenau, Ukraine to John P. and Helen Martens. His mother died in 1916 and his father remarried in 1918. The family immigrated to Canada in 1924. They worked as labourers on farms in Ontario and Manitoba, moving to Coaldale, Alta. in 1929. They operated Del Monte General Store until 1946. John R., together with brother Pete, took over the business that later became the IGA Supermarket and ran it until 1967. John accepted Jesus Christ, was baptized and joined Coaldale MB Church in 1933. He attended Coaldale Bible School 1 year. He married Susie Wiebe Aug. 8, 1937. In 1967 they retired to Abbotsford, joining Bakerview MB Church. In retirement, he worked in real estate and helped his son-in-law farm in Manitoba. He was a good businessman, an encourager, and a gracious and grateful gentleman. Predeceased by Susie, son Orlando and 1 brother, he is mourned by son John of Coaldale; daughters Loretta Fournier of Abbotsford, Trudy Ulsrud of Toronto and Debbi Thiessen of Griswold, Man.; 1 sister; 3 brothers. The funeral was June 10 in Bakerview MB Church with Ray Harris ministering.
Katherine Rempel
Katherine Rempel died June 10. She was born Feb. 9, 1919 to Henry and Katharina Wittenberg in Siberia, Russia. She accepted Christ at 12 and was baptized at 20. She married John Rempel Aug. 9, 1941. They loved music and were involved in church and community choirs. Her desire was to be a good wife and mother. She prayed for her family and missionaries. She is mourned by son Herb of Toronto; daughter Joan Ens of Burnaby, B.C.; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. The funeral was June 16 in Bakerview MB Church, Abbotsford, with Michael Dick and Ray Harris ministering.
Adeline Enns
Adeline Enns died June 17. She was born Nov. 28, 1922 in Grossfuerstenland, Russia to Gertrude and Jacob Enns. The family immigrated to Canada in 1925, settling first in Hepburn, Sask., and later homesteading in Speedwell, Sask. She accepted Jesus as Saviour at 11 and was baptized by her father at 15, joining the MB church. She graduated from Bethany Bible School, Hepburn and MB Bible College, Winnipeg. She taught in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, in Cali, Colombia under MB Missions and in Vancouver. She travelled to many countries with friends and visited family in Canada and abroad. Predeceased by sister Mary, she is mourned by brothers Abe, Jack, Henry and John; sisters Gertrude Froese, Hilda Schroeder and Nettie Nan Doerksen. The funeral was July 14 in Culloden MB Church, Vancouver, with Rudy Willms ministering.
Irene Van Bergen
Irene Van Bergen died June 25. She was born Sept. 27, 1917 in Kuban, Russia to Isaak and Hilda Matthies. In 1924 the family emigrated from Russia with stops in Cuba and Mexico, arriving in Canada in 1926. They settled in Manitou, Man. She accepted the Lord, was baptized and joined the MB church in 1931. In 1935 they moved to Black Creek, B.C. She became a charter member of the MB Church and served in ladies fellowship and Sunday school. She married Henry Van Bergen Aug. 28, 1938. She loved flowers, gardening, baking and knitting. She was a devout, joyful and praying mother. In 1983 they moved to Clearbrook, B.C., joining Bakerview MB Church. 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 exemplified her life. Predeceased by Henry May 17, 2003, she is mourned by daughter Ellenor Tweedy, Campbell River, B.C.; sons Ed of Langley and Herb of Port Coquitlam; 2 sisters; 1 brother. The funeral was June 30 in Bakerview MB Church with Ray Harris and Wilmer Kornelson ministering.
Pauline Spidel
Pauline Spidel died June 20. She was born in Saskatchewan Aug. 6, 1922. She was baptized at East Aldergrove (B.C.) MB Church May 26, 1985 by Wilf Richert and joined South Langley (B.C.) MB Church Nov. 25, 2000. She is mourned by children Ronald, Patricia, Eilene and Cindy.
Elizabeth Wiebe
Elizabeth Laura (Janzen) Wiebe died June 19. She was born Nov. 11, 1914 in Chinook, Mont. The family moved to Mennon, Sask. She married Bill Wiebe Apr. 9, 1936. They moved to Abbotsford in 1944, living on a small farm. She enjoyed homemaking and offering hospitality. She worked part-time at the Abbotsford Christian Book Store and Hat Shop. She was involved in community and church, helping her husband in his responsibilities, and welcoming people to Central Heights MB Church. She was president of ladies fellowship and was in charge of the primary Sunday school department for 22 years. She hosted and taught Good News Clubs in her home. Predeceased by Bill, son Ron, 1 granddaughter, 2 brothers and 3 sisters, she is mourned by daughters Dolores Brandt of San Jose, Calif. and Elaine Allen of Dallas, Tex., 7 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers; 1 sister. The funeral was June 24 in Bakerview MB Church with Christopher Douglas ministering.
Harry Vander Ploeg

Harry Vander Ploeg died July 5. He was born May 11, 1936 in Oudebilzijl, Friesland. When he was 15, the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Vauxhall, Alta. He worked at Clarindale Stock Farms, became an electrician and then a bus driver for Cardinal Coach Lines in his retirement. He married Alice Oldenburger Nov. 30, 1962. In 1978 they became foster parents, adopting 2 children. They were members of Vauxhall Christian Reform Church for 35 years, and after it closed joined Vauxhall MB Church. He was active in the community, particularly as a volunteer EMR for Vauxhall Emergency Services. He enjoyed spending time at the seniors centre, especially playing cribbage. He coached minor league baseball, was an avid fisherman and loved camping. Predeceased by 1 brother, he is mourned by Alice, sons Stan of Calgary, Jeff of Edmonton, Clinton of Lethbridge, Alta.; daughters Faye of Lethbridge, Helene of Edmonton and Laura of Camrose, Alta.; 2 granddaughters; 2 sisters. The funeral was July 8 in Vauxhall MB Church with Mike Vandyk ministering.
Margaret Enns Neufeldt
Margaret Enns Neufeldt died July 13. She was born Sept. 21, 1910 to Heinrich Abraham and Margarethe Enns in Petrovka/Lichtfeld, Siberia. In 1923 the family moved to Blumenort, where she experienced salvation and was baptized and received in the MB Church in 1924. Her mother became a midwife, so at age 14 Margaret had to cook and help her father look after 6 younger children. The family immigrated to Canada in 1926, settling first in Zeneta, Sask., and then in 1929 moving to Yarrow, B.C. She did housework in Vancouver and later in Chilliwack, B.C. She married Henry Peter Neufeldt in 1931. In 1947 the family moved to Winnipeg where Henry studied at MBBC. They returned to Yarrow, then moved to Coaldale, Alta., and to Paraguay where Henry taught in Bible schools. They moved to Abbotsford where she cooked at Columbia Bible Institute, volunteered at MCC, ministered at Tabor and Menno Homes, coordinated sewing circles in Yarrow and Abbotsford, and volunteered at the archives of the Mennonite Historical Society of B.C. After Henry died in 2001 she moved into Tabor Manor. Predeceased by Henry, 1 sister and 1 brother, she is mourned by sons Victor, Leonard, Wally, Ronald, Al; daughters Lora and Carol; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral was at Ross Road Community Church, Abbotsford, with Rudy Willms ministering.
Jacob H. Janzen
Jacob H. Janzen died Apr. 6. He was born Dec. 30, 1931 in Crystal City, Man. He moved to Winnipeg and then to McCreary, Man. He married Elisabeth Dueck June 1, 1957. He graduated from psychiatric nursing school and worked at the Brandon Mental Hospital for 17 years, then went into sales and later had his own business. Music and singing were a major part of his life. He won the Rose Bowl in Brandon in 1958 and was runner-up for the Rose Bowl in Winnipeg in 1959. He was choir director in Brandon, started the orchestra for the Brandon Church music committee and sang solos for many functions. He enjoyed travelling, camping, and visiting Disney theme parks. He accepted the gradual physical limitations of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy with courage and dignity. He is mourned by Elisabeth, son Marvin; daughters Marlene Yogis and Violet Herring; 12 grandchildren. The funeral was Apr. 11 in Westwood Community Church, Winnipeg.
Michael Young

Charles Michael Packard Young died May 14. He was born Jan. 20, 1950 in Montreal to Gordon and Phyllis Young. He attended boarding school, where his athletic skills were known to outshine his academic skills. He loved life in the fast lane and was the life of the party. As a young man he met a young girl on the beach who told him about Jesus. At 21, Mike accepted Christ as his Saviour and his life was radically changed. He was a devoted, wholehearted and enthusiastic servant of Jesus Christ. He attended Nipawin (Sask.) Bible Institute where he was mentored by Rev. Jacob Wiebe. Later he graduated from Providence Theological Seminary. He married Shirley Anderson Feb. 12, 1977. They spent their entire married lives in ministry to others. He touched the life of every person he knew in a memorable way. He pastored South Park MB Church, Altona, Man.; Riverview MB Church, Moncton, N.B., and Cariboo Bethel Church, Williams Lake, B.C. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in Dec. 2003. Always sensitive to the people around him, he preached the gospel in cowboy attire at the Williams Lake Stampede, won tennis and weightlifting championships, and was active in community events. He was a servant ready to do whatever needed to be done to advance the gospel. He will be remembered for his competitive nature, his outgoing personality, the cups of coffee at Tim Hortons, but most of all for his passion to know Christ and make Him known. He is mourned by Shirley, daughters Carolee Stevenson and Johanna Rudichuk, 3 grandchildren, 1 brother, 4 sisters. Memorial services were held in Williams Lake, Moncton and Calgary.
