John J. Rempel

John J. Rempel died Apr. 2. He was born Apr. 22, 1923 to Johann and Aganetha Rempel in Sagradovka, Ukraine. In 1926 the family immigrated to Foxwarren, Man., then moved to Yarrow, B.C. in 1941 and settled in Arnold, B.C. He became a Christian in his mid-teens and was baptized, joining Yarrow MB Church. He attended Bible school in Yarrow and in Abbotsford, B.C. He was involved in children’s ministry, and in lay preaching and teaching Sunday school up to age 80. Vacations were often scheduled to coincide with church conventions. He served on Tabor Home and MEI boards. He married Mary Toews Oct. 15, 1950. They ran a small dairy farm and he worked for the Public Works Dept. of Sumas and Abbotsford, becoming assistant superintendent. After retirement he added golf and Tim Hortons to his daily schedule. He will be remembered as a man of God who humbly lived the life he taught. Predeceased by 2 brothers, he is mourned by Mary; sons David, Dan, Harv, Ben, Ron, Rick and Al; daughters Vangie Truex, Carol Thiessen and Rose Wiedman; 20 grandchildren. The funeral was Apr. 8 in Bakerview Church, Abbotsford, with Rob Dyck ministering.
Katie Driedger
Katie Driedger died May 11. She was born Aug. 27, 1923 near Slavgorod, Siberia to Abram and Mary Driediger. The family immigrated through Germany to Canada in 1930, settling in Brookdale, Man. Katie accepted Christ into her life at an early age, considering it her most important decision. She married John Driedger June 19, 1948. They farmed and helped in Justice (Man.) MB Church. She taught Sunday school, sang in groups, volunteered at the MCC Thrift Store and cooked at Gospel Light Bible Camp. They retired to Brandon in 1985, joining Richmond Park MB Church. She enjoyed spending family times at Clear Lake and on holidays and birthdays. Gardening, quilting, reading, cross-stitching, baking, visiting with friends and volunteering were delights. Predeceased by John, 3 siblings, she is mourned by daughters Marion of Brandon, Ruth Froese of Yorkton, Sask. and Joyce of Springstein, Man.; sons Len of Russell, Man. and Fred of Brandon; 13 grandchildren; 2 brothers; 1 sister. The funeral was May 16 in Richmond Park MB Church with Dave Ens ministering.
Walter Henry Hinz
Walter Henry Hinz died Apr. 5. He was born Oct. 25, 1909 in Laird, Sask. He was married to Mary. He was school principal for 27 years at David Brankin Elementary School in Surrey, B.C. He enjoyed teaching and winter vacations in Mesa, Ariz. Predeceased by son Wayne and 1 great-grandchild, he is mourned by Mary, his wife of 67 years; daughters Carol and Virginia; 4 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Apr. 12 in Central Heights Church, Abbotsford.
Elvira Rempel
Elvira Rempel died May 12. She was born June 3, 1929 in Sagradovka, Russia, immigrated to Morden, Man. in late 1929. She began her walk of faith as a teen and was baptized, joining Morden MB Church in 1945. She moved to Winnipeg after high school and married Alfred Rempel. They were active in Portage Ave. MB Church. She was involved with Manitoba Crafts Guild, embroidering heirloom quality keepsakes. Predeceased by 3 brothers, she is mourned by Alfred; son Robert of Kitchener, Ont.; daughter Barbara Westfall of Morden; 2 grandchildren; 2 sisters.
Hilda Loewen
Hilda Loewen died Apr. 27. She was born Aug. 28, 1919 near Mennon, Sask. to Peter and Margaretha Quiring. She married Peter Loewen June 3, 1945 in Dalmeny, Sask. They farmed north of Dalmeny, moving to town in 1978. She worked at the craft department in Dalmeny Nursing Home. She enjoyed family holiday meals and making specialties for her family. Eating out and watching Jeopardy were favourite activities. After retirement they went on numerous bus tours. She was known for her sewing, quilting, knitting and crocheting. She quilted blankets for MCC, taught Awana and Sunday school, and always had a large garden. Predeceased by 1 sister and 2 brothers, she is mourned by Peter; daughters Norma Doell, Ruth Pilot, Carolyn Bray; son Vic; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 1 sister; 2 brothers.
Marilyn Fraser

Marilyn Fraser died Apr. 27. She was born May 22, 1956 to Jake and Lydia Heinrichs in Port Rowan, Ont. She accepted Christ at a young age at a Barry Moore Crusade. She was baptized, joining Port Rowan (Ont.) MB Church. At age 12 she developed diabetes. She attended Winkler Bible School for one year, then married Doug Fraser July 19, 1975. She taught ceramics and made gifts for family and friends. She enjoyed playing with her children as well as winter vacations in Florida. She helped serve customers at Doug’s gas station, then worked at a paint and decorating store. In August 1999 she fell from a ladder, severing her spinal cord, which left her paralyzed from the waist down. With home renovations and rehabilitation she was able to live independently. She wrote poetry, read, made cards, cooked, baked and painted. She taught Sunday school, girls club and sang in the choir. Her strong faith carried her through many trying situations. She died in a house fire. She is mourned by daughters Shannon and Bonnie; parents Jake and Lydia Heinrichs; 3 sisters; 3 brothers. The funeral was Apr. 30 in Port Rowan MB Church with Bill Wiebe ministering.
Edward Theodore Friesen

Edward Theodore Friesen died Apr. 23. He was born in Russia to Aron Abr. and Catherine Friesen. The family immigrated to Canada in 1926. When Ed was 12 years old his father died. He left school at 14 and with his brother bought their first Caterpillar. He was baptized at 16, joining Newton Siding (Man.) MB Church. He married Helen Epp Aug. 6, 1955. He owned and operated a construction company at Oakville, Man. until 1971, then moved to Abbotsford, B.C. where he continued in construction. He acquired a private pilot’s license in 1959. He had a zest for life, enjoyed travelling, camping, quadding, playing guitar and singing with his family. He loved the Lord, saying, “I can’t preach or be a missionary, but I can work and give to those in need.” Predeceased by 1 sister and 1 brother, he is mourned by Helen, son Gerry; daughters Darlene Heriot of Abbotsford and Jennifer Boldt of Chilliwack, B.C. The funeral was Apr. 28 in Bakerview MB Church, Abbotsford, with Michael Dick and Ray Harris ministering.
Philip Dueck
Philip Dueck died Feb. 12. He was born Nov. 13, 1948 to John and Frieda Dueck in Niagara Falls, Ont. At age 8 he accepted Christ, and in 1965 was baptized. He married Beverley Neufeld in 1970. He became a pilot, flying first in Quebec and then for Air Canada, the last few years as captain on the Boeing 767. He was active in Vineland (Ont.) MB Church, serving as an elder. He enjoyed waterskiing, camping and cottaging. He was dedicated to his family and his Saviour. He is mourned by Bev, daughter Andrea Koop, sons Greg and Scott; 1 granddaughter; 4 siblings. The funeral was Feb. 16 in Vineland MB Church with Doug Schulz and Randy Dueck ministering.
