Commemorative rock marks forgotten cemetery

Arnaud, Man.

Previous | Next

At one time, Arnaud, Man. was a flourishing town with more than 200 residents, and had both a Mennonite church and an MB church. The town also had three cemeteries. Peter Dyck, a local farmer, became concerned about these cemeteries after seeing a cemetery in another area of Manitoba seemingly totally forgotten. He did not want that to happen to the cemetery where his father and others are buried.

Dyck and his friend, Henry Schulz, spent months scouring the countryside looking for just the right rock for a commemorative boulder to mark the spot. Next he tracked down the descendants of the 26 people buried on the grounds where a former Mennonite Brethren church once stood. These families made small donations to the project and the names of the deceased were engraved on the rock. This rock was installed in the cemetery late last summer.
