A crusader on the road of prayer Leading onward man of Christ Alone in body, not in spirit No worldly destination known.
Forty miles sunrise to sunset A thousand steps, ten thousand more His feet on fire, his heart aflame His soul a kindling ember’s glow.
Devil-demons driven from mind By prayers to Saviour, words unceasing Holding forth his Jesus prayer “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me!”
A journey onward, earth to travel A journey inward, heaven-bound A walk through valleys of no death To help one other to Salvation.
His knapsack holds his only treasure The book of prayers to guide his quest His worldly goods cannot be stolen Thieves can take but cannot keep.
No food to carry, hunger absent A scrap of bread his greatest banquet Water quenches more than thirst It’s holy blood for his communion.
Solitude means not forsaken The Lord is with him every step Shake off the dust, remain no stranger Please take me on your journey, Pilgrim.
Jim Katan is a member of Restigouche Valley Church, Campbellton, N.B., and often contributes to worship by writing songs. Another member of the congregation, who submitted this poem with his permission, wrote that Mr. Katan always walks to church and that these lines very much express his spiritual journey.
