New churches for Ukraine

Abbotsford, B.C.

Previous | Next

Ukraine, the former homeland of many Mennonite people, has become a major mission field for many church planting agencies. Mennonite Brethren have also adopted Ukraine as a priority for church planting through MBMS International.

Four churches have been established in the Molochna and Chortitza areas and several others are being proposed. The Rueckenau Church was dedicated in spring 2004 and the Kutuzoka Church was restored and dedicated in 1999. The Mennonite churches in Zaporozhye and Kherson were started under the umbrella of the Mennonite Church. These four churches are working together as the Christian Union of Mennonite Churches, organized in 2004.

Two new churches are being proposed by MBMS International, the first in the village of Tschongrav, Crimea. This was the location of the Bible school which was closed in 1924 but gave rise to Winkler (Man.) Bible School in 1925 when A.H. Unruh, J. G. Wiens and G.J. Reimer emigrated to Canada. A cluster of house churches is being planned for this area.

The second proposed location for a church is in Lichtenau, Molochna. This was the location of the railroad station from which many Mennonites boarded the train that took them to freedom in the 1920s. A modest church facility is being projected to be built here.

Disciple Making International (DMI) saturation evangelism events are being planned for these areas and church planters are being sought. More information is available from DMI at 604-859-6267.
