Elmer Martens and Willard M. Swartley, editors of the Believers Church Bible Commentary series, were honoured for service spanning three decades at the annual meeting of the editorial council Nov. 19 in San Antonio, Texas.
Swartley, of the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Ind., served as New Testament editor from 1989 to 2001 during which time he edited nine volumes in the series. He was also part of the Mennonite Publication Board where he helped shape the direction of the project. Elmer Martens, of the MB Biblical Seminary, Fresno, Cal., served as Old Testament editor and wrote on Jeremiah, the first volume of the series, and edited eight Old Testament volumes. He also helped set direction for the project during a study leave in 1981–1982. Gordon Zerbe of Canadian Mennonite University, Winnipeg, has been appointed editor of New Testament and Douglas Miller of Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kan. as editor of Old Testament. The latest volume in the series, Proverbs, by John W. Miller of Waterloo, Ont. was released during these meetings.
