Why I am a Christian

John Stott. InterVarsity Press, 2003.

John Stott, an internationally known preacher and evangelist, wrote this convenient hardcover booklet to help “not-yet-Christians” find Jesus. At $10, it makes a great gift.

Stott invited Jesus into his life on Feb. 13, 1938. From this born-again perspective he looks at our pluralistic society and provides significant insights into Christianity for our day.

The leader of Christianity – Jesus – is portrayed in the Gospels as one who dies on the cross. The gospels relate the last week of His life in detail (a quarter of Matthew, a third of Mark and Luke, and half of John). This is unique to Christianity. All other religions portray only the life of their leader. It was Jesus’ death on the cross that brought eternal life.

As humans we are capable of good and evil and Jesus died to make us clean and give us a new heart that desires the good. This freedom gives us the ability to love God, others and even ourselves.

Stott concludes with an invitation to readers to let Jesus be their Saviour and Lord.
