Peter Frank Bargen

Peter Frank Bargen died Aug. 25. He was born Apr. 1, 1922 to Frank and Elizabeth Bargen. He immigrated to Canada in February 1930. He married Anne Peters June 3, 1945. She died Jan. 25, 1997. He obtained a PhD in Educational Administration from the University of Alberta. He held positions in education and civic administration, including Chief City Commissioner for Edmonton. He was a founding member of Lendrum MB Church, Edmonton. He was involved in leadership in Lendrum, serving as church board chair for many years. He oversaw the building of the fellowship hall and the sanctuary. He believed the church must apply and live Christ’s principles in the world and be involved in outreach and communication with the world. He was on the Alberta Christian Education Commission and Faith and Life Commission and on the Canadian MB Conference Board of Higher Education. Predeceased by Anne, he is mourned by sons Richard and Neil; daughter Charlene; 6 grandchildren; 2 sisters. The funeral was Aug. 28 in Lendrum MB Church.

Jacob Voth

Jacob Voth

Jacob Voth died Aug. 30. He was born Mar. 23, 1916 to Johann and Sarah Voth in Herbert, Sask. He based his conversion on Isaiah 53:5,6. He was baptized in 1935 and joined Greenfarm MB Church. He attended Herbert Bible School for 4 years. He married Ruth Penner Oct. 13, 1940. They farmed in Greenfarm. He loved the Lord and desired to serve Him faithfully. He taught Sunday school, sang in a choir and a quartet, played his guitar and led the church, preaching when needed. When the Greenfarm church amalgamated with Herbert MB Church he was a deacon, building committee chair and Sunday school teacher. He served on the Bethany Bible Institute board. He retired to Abbotsford in 1981, later moving to Lethbridge, Alta. He did woodwork. He loved to travel and visited Africa, Brazil, as well as places in U.S. and Canada. He was a quiet, gentle man of integrity, faith and commitment to the Lord and his family. He was often heard humming a hymn or chorus. He is mourned by Ruth; daughters Merle Carlson, Elaine Hiebert, Dianne Voth, Karen McDonald, Verona Mullison; son Verlan. The funeral was Sept 4. in Lethbridge Evangelical Free Church.

George C. Andrews

George C. Andrews died Sept. 5. He was born June 11, 1922 to Cornelius and Anna Andrews in Mariawohl, Ukraine. The family immigrated to Arnaud, Man. In 1936 they moved to Vineland, Ont. In 1941 he was baptized and joined the church. In 1942 he joined the army and was honourably discharged 19 months later. He married Frieda Hiebert in Oct. 1944. He was plant foreman for Boise Foods Canning Factory and later was a mink rancher. After retirement he drove for Laskey’s Limousine Service. He took pleasure in the ordinary things of life. He enjoyed coffee shop fellowship and pool games. He had a good sense of humour and collected stories, poems and jokes. Predeceased by 1 daughter at birth, 1 grandson, 2 brothers, 1 sister, he is mourned by daughters Sheila Durksen, Kathy Andrews, Sharlene Andrews, Carol Andrews; son Wayne Andrews; 4 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters; 1 brother. The funeral was Sept. 8 in Fairview MB Church.

Elizabeth Enns

Elizabeth Enns was born June 9, 1922 in Odessa, Ukraine to Peter H. and Helen Fast. The family immigrated to Main Centre, Sask. when Elizabeth was 4. The family moved to Yarrow, B.C. when she was 15. She accepted God’s gift of love and was baptized. At 16 she went to work as a maid and nanny in Vancouver. She attended Yarrow Bible School for 1 winter. She married John H. Enns of Yarrow Dec. 6, 1942. He was a C.O. on Vancouver Island. She worked at the Lourdes Hospital in Campbell River, B.C. They moved to Vancouver and later to Sumas Prairie, B.C. John worked in Vancouver and Elizabeth looked after the farm. In 1953 they moved to a farm in Abbotsford. In retirement they travelled and wintered in the south. She invested her life in family and was proud of her children and grandchildren. She is mourned by John; daughters Grace, Luella, Florence and Betsy; sons Edwin and James.

George Gossen

George Gossen

George Gossen died Mar. 10. He was born June 15, 1922 to Peter and Justina Gossen in Hepburn, Sask. He loved sports and the outdoors. He married Tina Fast in Mar. 1943. He worked for farmers, fisheries and loggers. They moved to Ontario where he worked in factories and construction. They moved to Parsons, B.C. Here he worked in the oil field and at a sawmill. In North Surrey he had a hobby farm and worked on the boom on the Fraser River for 20 years. After a move to Lone Butte, B.C., they both accepted the Lord and enjoyed the church. In 1988 they moved to Hepburn, joining the MB Church and enjoying friends and fellowship. Tina died in Mar. 1992. In Sept. 1993 he married Peggy Neudorf. They enjoyed travelling, boating, fishing and times at their cottage. Predeceased by Tina, he is mourned by Peggy; step-sons Eugene, Conrad and Cordell; 7 step-grandchildren; 1 step-great-granddaughter; 4 sisters; 1 brother; 4 foster children. The funeral was Mar. 13 in Hepburn MB Church.

Peter Schellenberg

Peter Schellenberg

Peter Schellenberg died June 15. He was born Nov. 20, 1915 in Herbert, Sask. to Jacob and Maria Schellenberg. The family moved to Carnduff, Waldheim and Hepburn, Sask. He married Rubena in 1937. They moved to Trail and Castlegar, B.C. He worked at various jobs until 1942 when they moved to a farm near Hepburn. They both accepted the Lord and were baptized at Hepburn. A short stint in Ontario was followed by a move to Waldheim where he worked as a mechanic and fire chief. He loved studying the Bible and taught Sunday school many years. Predeceased by daughters Deanna and Julia, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, he is mourned by Rubena; sons Dennis, Wayne, Jim; daughters Marilyn Hamelin, Arlene Klassen; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; 3 sisters. The funeral was June 19 in Waldheim MB Church.

Margaret Wendland

Margaret Wendland

Margaret Wendland died May 12. She was born Nov. 23, 1915 in Brightholm, Sask. to Stefan and Emma Schmalz. She learned Polish, English and German, knitting, crocheting and household skills. She was raised in the Lutheran faith. She married Edward Wendland July 27, 1935. He was a teacher. She looked after the farm near Waldheim, Sask. She took her children to church with horses and sleigh or buggy. She was baptized upon confession of her faith by H.A. Willems and joined Brotherfield MB Church near Waldheim, Sask. They moved into Waldheim in 1946 and were involved in a John Deere farm machinery business. Edward died in 1984. In 1986 she moved into Mennonite Nursing Home in Rosthern, Sask. Predeceased by Edward, 4 children in infancy, and 2 sisters, she is mourned by sons Rueben, Prince Albert, Sask.; Wilfred, Kelowna, B.C.; Hildor, Prespatou, B.C.; Ben, Langley, B.C.; Leslie, Fort St. John, B.C.; Dan, Waldheim; daughters Grace Plett, Stratford, Ont.; Gloria, Burnaby, B.C.; I brother; 1 sister; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

Marie Minnie (Mary) Ebach

Marie Minnie (Mary) Ebach

Marie Minnie (Mary) Ebach died July 2. She was born Oct. 31, 1913 to Jacob and Anna Dickman near Hepburn, Sask. She married Clarence Ebach Oct. 15, 1933. She dedicated her life to the Lord in 1958 and was baptized. She joined Hepburn MB Church in 1959. She was an usher, on the MCC committee, Christian Literature Committee and Hepburn Golden Age Centre committee. She was a good cook and had a large vegetable garden. She loved to visit and host visitors. Her life demonstrated her devotion to the Lord. Predeceased by Clarence in 1983, 2 sisters and 1 brother, she is mourned by sons Marvin of Hepburn and Larry of Loon Lake; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.

Peter Jacob Klassen

Peter Jacob Klassen

Peter Jacob Klassen died Aug. 18. He was born Mar. 17, 1925 in Margenau, Molotschna Colony, Ukraine to Jacob and Anna Klassen. His father died when Peter was 10 and his mother later died of starvation. He accepted the Lord at 22 and was baptized June 1, 1947. He fled Ukraine and had to serve in the German army. He was captured and spent time in a POW camp. After release he went to a refugee camp in Gronau, Germany. He married Mary Penner Feb. 8, 1948. They immigrated to Neuland Colony, Paraguay. He studied at Elim Bible School, Fernheim, and was ordained to ministry. They immigrated to Coaldale, Alta. in 1953, then to Vancouver Island. There he pastored the MB church and worked as a logger. They moved to Coaldale, and then to Kitchener, Ont. In 1968 they moved to Kelowna, B.C. and finally to the Fraser Valley, B.C. He took his faith seriously and the Bible literally. He had a good work ethic, enjoyed humour and was generous in helping others. He went on 26 Disciple Making International trips to Russia, Ukraine, Philippines and Nigeria. Music was important and the family band played at churches, weddings and homes. He directed singing in choirs and congregation. He enjoyed sports and table games. Predeceased by daughter Elfrieda, he is mourned by Mary; sons Henry, Grand Forks, B.C.; Albert, Abbotsford; Wally, Salmon Arm, B.C.; daughters Liz, White Rock, B.C.; Ruth Ann, Abbotsford; 10 grandchildren. The funeral was Aug. 23 in Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford.

Konstantin Oskar Ernst Sawatzky

Konstantin Oskar Ernst Sawatzky

Oskar Sawatzky died Aug. 31. He was born June 24, 1919 in Adelsdorf, Niedershlesien, Germany to Heinrich J. and Matylda Sawatzky. The family immigrated to Dalmeny, Sask. in 1923. He attended Bethany Bible Institute for 1 year. He accepted the Lord in the late 1930s. He was baptized and joined Dalmeny MB Church. His relationship with Jesus was a priority. He married Helen Krause Oct. 19, 1951. They lived in Saskatoon where Oskar worked at warehouses. In 1957 they moved to Dalmeny to operate a gas station. In 1959 they moved to the family farm. He loved to farm, garden and work on projects. He loved his family. He sang in quartets and choirs, taught Sunday school, led clubs, was a deacon and took care of the church grounds. He had a special love for children, especially those who needed extra attention. He is mourned by Helen; daughters Donna Nazarenko, Smith Falls, Ont.; Beverly Phillips, Castlegar, B.C.; sons Arden, Saskatoon; Kevin, Calgary; 3 grandchildren; 2 brothers; 1 sister. The funeral was Sept. 6 in Dalmeny Community Church.

Susan Duerksen

Susan Duerksen

Susan Duerksen died Aug. 28. She was born Feb. 27, 1922 to Cornelius and Katherine Warkentin in Arkadak, South Russia. The family immigrated to Margaret, Man. when she was 3. She married John Duerksen in 1943. They farmed near Holmfield, Man., moving to Killarney, Man. in 1976. She loved the Lord and prayed faithfully for her family. She made a quilt for each grandchild. She wrote her memoirs, poems and short stories. She had a keen sense of humour. Predeceased by John May 13, 1 grandson, 1 granddaughter, she is mourned by daughters Judy Dueck, Dianne Unrau, Susan Hamm, Lynda Brubacher, Rose Heide, Barb Nickel; son John; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Aug. 31 in Lakeview Community Church, Killarney.

Walter Wiebe

Walter Wiebe

Walter Wiebe died Sept. 6. He was born Mar. 13, 1927 in Chortitza, Ukraine to Peter and Elizabeth Wiebe. He served in the German army, was wounded and taken prisoner. Upon his release he found his family and immigrated to Winnipeg in 1949. He accepted the Lord at 22. He married Helene Hildebrand Aug. 25, 1951 and settled in Black Creek, B.C. He worked as a logger and a sign painter. He served God through his art, leading music, building a Sunday school mission and a Christian bookstore. In 1976 he moved to Victoria and later to Richmond, B.C. where he worked for B.C. Ferries as a sign painter. They were members of Bakerview MB Church, Abbotsford. They enjoyed time with family at their cabin at Shuswap Lake, B.C. He is mourned by Helene; daughters Tillie, Calgary; Charlotte Krahn, North Vancouver; sons Alf, Richmond, B.C.; Harold, Surrey, B.C.; 10 grandchildren; 2 brothers; 2 sisters;. The funeral was Sept. 13 in Bakerview MB Church.

Jacob Tilitzky

Jacob Tilitzky

Jacob Tilitzky died Aug. 31. He was born June 30, 1904 in Einlage, South Russia to Gerhard and Elizabeth Tilitzky. His father died in 1920. In 1923 he immigrated to Herbert, Sask. In 1926, through the ministry of C.N. Hiebert, he accepted Christ. He was baptized and joined Greenfarm MB Church. He married Katharine Andres in 1932. They farmed in Neidpath, then in Greenfarm. In 1947 they moved to Herbert where they joined Herbert MB Church. He worked for various firms, the longest term with Herbert Co-op where he made many friends delivering fuel to the farmers. He instilled in his family a deep reverence and love for God. He was an usher in the church. His work left little time for holidays or hobbies but he enjoyed being with his family, singing and laughing with them. Predeceased by Katherine in 2003, he is mourned by daughters Elsie Thiessen, Nettie Wiebe, Mary Christianson; son Ben; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; 2 brothers. The funeral was Sept. 4 in Herbert MB Church.

Olga Enns

Olga Enns died Sept. 1. She was born May 3, 1917 to Gerhard and Lena Enns in Tiegenhof, Ukraine. The family immigrated to Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont. in 1924. She accepted Christ as a teen. She was baptized and joined Kitchener MB Church. She worked in business. She was active in Women’s Missionary Service, Sunday school, church office, library and other committees. She spent 3 years with MCC in Uruguay. She organized the Women’s Missionary Service of the Ontario MB Conference in 1960. She was part of Camp Crossroads and worked in the camp office. She was on the council of Christian Women’s After 5 for many years. Predeceased by 3 brothers, she is mourned by her sisters-in-law; 4 nephews and 1 niece. The funeral was Sept. 6 in Kitchener MB Church.

Erna Doerksen

Erna Doerksen

Erna Doerksen died Sept. 4. She was born May 19, 1917 in Issyl Kul, Siberia, to Abram and Justina Wiens. The family immigrated to Morden, Man. in 1926, then to Steinbach, Man. In 1929 they moved to Gem, Alta. She received Jesus as Saviour at 14 and was baptized. She attended Bible school in Gem for 2 years, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She married John Doerksen Oct. 22, 1938. In 1945 they moved to Abbotsford and settled on a dairy farm. They attended Arnold MB Church and later South Abbotsford MB Church. John died May 1984. She moved to Evergreen Village and joined Clearbrook MB Church. She sang in the German choir. Because of deteriorating health she moved to Hallmark Assisted Living in Nov. 2002. She attended church via TV. She knit and crocheted for family and relief organizations. She was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to tapes. Predeceased by John, 2 infant grandchildren and 6 siblings, she is mourned by sons Ben and Bill; daughters Marie, Martha and Betty; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 sister. The funeral was Sept. 9 at Clearbrook MB Church.

Lili Loewen

Lili Loewen

Lili Loewen died Sept. 6. She was born July 26, 1910 in Alexanderkrone, Ukraine to David and Anna Harder. She married Jacob Goossen. They did not receive permission to leave Russia so escaped to China. They lived in Kuldja. In 1939 Jacob was jailed and Lili had to work to support the family. Two sons and 1 daughter died there. Jacob was returned to Russia in 1941 and never heard from again. In 1946 she travelled to Shanghai and in 1948, with help from MCC, was able to immigrate to Yarrow, B.C. She bought a house in Vancouver, taking in tenants. She was a dressmaker. She was active in Vancouver MB Church, singing in the choir. Son Peter died in 1967. In 1975 she married Abram Loewen. They moved to Clearbrook, joining Clearbrook MB Church. She sang in the choir and arranged flowers for the church. Daughter Leni died in 1981. Abram died in 2000. She moved into Ebenezer Home in Apr. 2004. She was a loving, generous person. In spite of tragedies she was positive and cheerful, with an inner peace and steadfast faith. She was involved in raising her grandchildren. Predeceased by Jacob, Abram, daughters Frieda, Leni, sons Martin, Otto, Peter, she is mourned by her grandchildren. The funeral was Sept. 10 in Clearbrook MB Church.
