Prayer for our public schools

Delores Falk

Previous | Next

In our schools issue last year (Nov. 14), we carried a prayer for Christian schools spoken by pastor Keith Poysti at the installation service of Canadian Mennonite University’s first president. Delores Falk, member of Cedar Park MB Church and a teacher with the Delta (B.C.) School Board for 25 years, responded with an adaptation of the prayer, dedicated to teachers and students who have chosen to “let their lights shine” in public schools throughout our land.

This adaptation follows (by permission of Poysti), not to set the two kinds of educational settings in opposition, but as a guide to prayer for all our many students and teachers.

—Eds.

Our Father in heaven,

We pray for the Christian students and Christian teachers this school year.

We ask that you provide them with the ordinary things of academic life:

stamina
wisdom
acceptance
friends
recall
balance
fairness
nourishing food
health
and perspective.

And even more, Lord, we pray for the extraordinary things!

May the lives of Christian students and teachers at our public schools reflect

Your glory, beauty and purity.
May they be unclouded mirrors,
cleansed by the Spirit of truth.

May our Christian students and teachers be living examples of what it means to be

disciples of Jesus,
students of the Word,
followers of the Way,
“Christ ones.”

May our public schools,

both in their myriad of activities and their quiet moments,

be filled with the sense of Your holy presence.

May Jesus’ teachings be reflected in all our interactions,

may the Holy Spirit be our counsellor,

and may You, Father, be our guide and source of strength.

AMEN
