The log building of the Community Gospel Chapel in New Hazelton, B.C., built some 27 years ago, has served the community well. But the time had come for some changes. Following much prayer, organization and faith, the roof was renovated July 12–16.
Ten volunteers from Mennonite Brethren churches in Langley, Vanderhoof and Prince Rupert, led by Glen Wutzke of Murrayville Community Church, Langley, B.C., came to assist the local volunteers for the job. In his opening briefing, Wutzke reminded everyone to be careful, as it was a long drop to the ground!
Pulling nails and ripping off the old tin, the volunteers removed the old roof in less than three hours, and then proceeded to remove the strapping and facia boards. The following three days, a new roof took shape as trusses were hoisted up and strapped into place. Facia boards were installed and two smaller roofs at the front of the building constructed. On the fifth day, Friday, the task of screwing the burgundy metal roofing onto the strapping was begun. Saturday morning, when the visiting volunteers left, was a day of mixed emotions. “We were thankful for the way the Lord had worked during the week,” says pastor Henry Hanna, “and we were sad to see our newly made friends leaving for home. When they pulled out of the church parking lot, it was as if a large void was left by their absence.” Although the job was not entirely completed by the time visiting volunteers left, skilled men of the congregation finished the installation of the metal roofing over the next week. The project was a good experience for the congregation, marked by solid step-by-step progress, fellowship and worship, and generally good weather. “Everyone was very excited with how the Lord was blessing and encouraging His people,” Hanna said. —from report
