David R. Dyck

David R. Dyck

David Ralph Dyck passed away May 29. He was born May 8, 1933 in Burwalde, Man. to John L. and Helena Dyck. At 16 he was baptized and joined Winkler MB Church. He graduated from high school in Winkler and received his Bachelor of Science (1956) and Bachelor of Education (1959) from the University of Manitoba. He obtained his PhD in History of Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1967. He taught at the University of Winnipeg for 30 years. He retired from the University in 1996. Following retirement, he was dean of Concord College, and assisted in the creation of Canadian Mennonite University. He also taught at Lithuania Christian College. He was a faithful member of River East MB Church, Winnipeg, where he taught Sunday school, served as moderator and sang in the choir. He also served the Manitoba MB Conference on the management and personnel committees. Whatever job he undertook, he always did it to the best of his ability. He is mourned by his wife, Roberta (MacNair); children James, Patricia and Michael; 5 brothers. The funeral was June 2 at River East MB Church.

Helen Quiring

Helen Quiring

Helen Quiring died suddenly June 24. She was born Sept. 30, 1953 to Cornelius and Elizabeth Wiebe in Cuauhtemoc, Chih. Mexico. She was baptized in 1972, joining the Rheinlaender Mennonite Church, later joining Wingham (Man.) Mennonite Church. More recently she was a member of Community Fellowship Church, Newton, Man. She worked in a sewing factory in Morden, Man. She married John Quiring in 1972. He died July 30, 1994. She encouraged their children in their spiritual walk and was available to listen to them. She loved drives to admire God’s creation, and enjoyed gardening and crocheting. Predeceased by John, she is mourned by children Norman, Audrey, Dennis, Jennifer and Randy; her mother; 8 brothers; 2 sisters. The funeral was June 29 in Community Fellowship Church.

Tina Janz

Tina Janz

Tina Janz died June 20. She was born Jan. 12, 1917 in Aliessovo, Orenburg, Russia to Jacob and Katharina Dueck. The family immigrated to Coaldale, Alta. in 1926. She worked on the farm to help the family survive. She accepted Christ at a young age, was baptized and joined Coaldale MB Church. Her faith sustained her through hardships. She attended Coaldale Bible School. She married Jacob Janz in 1942. They farmed in the Coaldale area. In 1955 Jake lost a leg in a farm accident. Tina held the family together during this stressful time. Jake died in 1999. She was compassionate and involved in MCC, raising funds for missions and local needs, such as Meals on Wheels. She loved gardening, particularly with roses. Music and singing as a family were highlights. She prayed for her children. She often told of a hymn or Scripture that comforted her at night. She is mourned by daughters Agnes Moore, St. Albert, Alta., Esther Berg, Coaldale, Marion Quiring, Calgary, Charlotte Quapp, Sherwood Park, Alta; Gwen Allison, Cranbrook, B.C.; sons Arnold, Ft. Saskatchewan, Alta., Rick, High River, Alta.; 14 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; 3 sisters.

Sam Willems

Sam Willems

Sam Willems died July 8. He was born Mar. 25, 1918 to Henry A. and Augusta Willems near Waldheim, Sask. He attended Bethany Bible Institute, Prairie Bible Institute and MB Bible College. He married Elizabeth Friesen Oct. 18, 1942 in Hepburn, Sask. They farmed in the Rose River School District, developing a new grain and feedlot farm near by. He was active in Brotherfield MB Church as choir director and moderator and served on the boards of Bethany Bible Institute, Redberry Bible Camp, Mennonite Trust Ltd., Saskatchewan and Canadian MB Conferences. He felt God’s special touch in his life due to a miraculous recovery from a serious early childhood illness. They retired from farming in 1984, moving to Hepburn, and later to Saskatoon, where they attended West Portal MB Church. They enjoyed travelling. Elizabeth died in 1995. Predeceased by Elizabeth, infant son Claire, 2 brothers, 1 sister, he is mourned by daughters Edith Janzen and Joan Grunau; 5 grandchildren; 1 brother; 2 sisters. The funeral was July 12 in West Portal Church.

Anne Esther Wiebe

Anne Esther Wiebe

Anne Esther Wiebe died Mar. 3. She was born Dec. 23, 1937 in Winkler Man. to Isaac and Nellie Wiebe. The family moved to Chilliwack, B.C. in 1945. She accepted the Lord and was baptized. She attended East Chilliwack Bible School. She moved to the Okanagan Valley, B.C. She married John Wiebe Nov. 9, 1963. They lived in Kelowna, B.C. where they farmed. Despite ill health, she had a positive outlook on life. They enjoyed family camping trips, gathering with extended family and cross-country skiing. She was hospitable and hosted youth groups, Bible studies and holiday celebrations in her home. She taught Sunday school, served on the food committee and was a greeter at church. Her family was precious to her. Anne is mourned by John; children Heather and Robert; 2 grandchildren; 2 sisters; 1 brother. The funeral was Mar. 9 in Willow Park Church, Kelowna.

Wayne Ernest Dyck

Wayne Ernest Dyck

Wayne Ernest Dyck died May 30. He was born Mar. 5, 1945 and grew up on the family farm at Elm Creek, Man. He married Stella. He worked for Versatile Equipment and BACM Construction, and later with the Department of Highways and Carman Farm Equipment. He had a heart attack in 1982, leading to a heart transplant in 1990. He was a representative for Celebration of Life in Elm Creek. He kept his sense of humour during his stays in the hospital. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, gardening, cooking and watching westerns. He taught his granddaughters how to knit. His belief in God sustained him. He is mourned by Stella, son Karl; daughters Melinda Ricard and Wynita Siemens; 6 grandchildren; 1 brother; 1 sister. The funeral was June 3 in Elm Creek MB Church.

Joseph Ormer Anderson

Joseph Ormer (Ormie) Anderson died May 29. He was born Oct. 6, 1920 in Arran, Sask. In 1938 he moved to La Riviere, Man. He served in the RCAF from 1941–46, then bought a farm near Manitou. He married Ruby Plomp in 1947. They retiring from farming after 42 years, moving to Manitou. In 2002 they moved to Pembina Manitou Place. Ormie accepted Christ as a teenager. He lived a life of deep faith and integrity in his family, church and community. He loved travel and anticipated his trip to heaven. The funeral was June 3 in Manitou MB Church.

John G. Kroeker

John G. Kroeker

John G. Kroeker died May 20. He was born July 25, 1921 in Terek, Russia to George and Agnes Kroeker. The family immigrated to Alexander, Man. in 1925. In 1939 he accepted the Lord and was baptized at Griswold (Man.) MB Church. The family moved to Justice, Man. in 1940. He married Anne June 19, 1943. He was a self-taught appliance repairman for Eatons and Sears in Winnipeg. In 1978 they moved to a farm near Minnedosa, Man., attending Justice MB Church, then in 1991 to Brandon, Man. John enjoyed Bible studies, church attendance, videotaping and audio recordings. He was committed to His Lord and the church. Predeceased by son Ed, 2 sisters, 1 brother and infant son John, 1 granddaughter; 1 great-granddaughter, he is mourned by Anne; sons John, Richard, Dave; daughters Julie, Carol, Ev; 1 sister. The funeral was May 24 in Richmond Park MB Church, Brandon.

George Goossen of Hepburn, Sask. died March 10.

Jacob Friesen

Jacob Friesen

Jacob Friesen died Mar. 25. He was born June 7, 1917 to Franz and Katharina Friesen in Ostrogozhsk, Old Colony, Ukraine. The family immigrated to Canada in 1924. He accepted Christ and was baptized. He attended Winkler (Man.) Bible School. He married Anne Penner Sept. 28, 1941 in Winnipeg. They moved to Vancouver in 1948. He worked in the flour milling business, then became a building contractor, forming Sunrise Construction. He was a founding member of Willingdon Church, Burnaby, B.C. He served as elder and in music. They moved Coquitlam where he joined Eagle Ridge Bible Fellowship. They travelled during their retirement. They were part of a church building team in San Salvador. He is remembered for his passion for music, devotion to his family and his love of God. He is mourned by Anne; sons Ernie, Richard and Allen; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 1 brother. The memorial service was Apr. 1 at Eagle Ridge Bible Fellowship.
