Missiologist and MBMSI program director for Africa, Nzash Lumeya, urges prayer for DR Congo. An attempted coup d’etat in the capital Kinshasa March 28 once more disturbed the fragile political situation in Congo, which has seen the death of more than three million people in war-related-hostilities since 1998. “Pray for security and encouragement for our sisters and brothers in Congo,” Lumeya wrote. “Congo needs comfort and not power conflicts.” Missionaries and national workers were not harmed in the situation. Mennonite Central Committee representative Epampia Mbo Wato also reported that the attempt to overthrow the government had not impacted MCC workers or Mennonite churches in Kinshasa. In an update on Congo MBMSI staff, Murray and Faith Nickel, (see Faith’s diary excerpt, MB Herald, Apr. 9), Faith writes of encouragements with the group of UCKin’s first medical graduates, who are translating the emergency medical handbook Murray has compiled over the past few years. The book, if published locally, will provide an affordable textbook to students who have few study materials available to them. However, she also writes that UCKin (the Christian University in Kinshasa) is struggling for life, and in a particularly discouraging setback, was robbed of $12,000 early March. —dd | ||||||
