Poem

ears like tiny shells, artist’s slender fingers, a
fascinating stranger with his mother’s mouth and
father’s gentle spirit sleeps holding palms
together – world’s potential wrapped in newborn
skin
lost Eden recreated in an infant; the planet now is
good – whole – roles of man and woman crystallize,
he is protector, she is nurturer and child knows only
love, is his parents’ joy in profound
form
as a siren in the street cries out, anguish for the
suffering earth flows from hearts now bonded
to new life – in this second they discover they will
sacrifice their lives for him, certain they have always loved
him
parents pray for their new trinity, may this little son
know only peace, both desire wisdom every moment
just like oxygen as baby sleeps, awakens, already
knows their presence – miracle of birth, metaphor of
heaven
