Cornelius Penner

Cornelius Penner

Cornelius Penner died Feb. 11. He was born July 9, 1921 to Peter and Katherine Penner in Friedensruh, Russia. The family immigrated to Namaka, Alta. in 1926, moved to Glenside and Bournmouth, Sask., then to Ontario. He accepted Jesus Christ at age 10, was baptized and joined Glenbush (Sask.) MB Church. He married Mary Kliewer from Virgil, Ont. in 1943. He was instrumental in starting Niagara Christian Fellowship Chapel, where he served for 11 years. They moved to St. Catharines, joining Scott St. MB Church, then Grantham MB Church. He taught Sunday school and was custodian. He carved wood as a hobby. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in mid-1990s. Even when fearful he was certain of his faith and longed to see Jesus. Predeceased by 2 sisters; 1 brother; he is mourned by Mary; daughters Dorothy Schritt and Marilyn Bender; sons John and Bert; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 brother; 2 sisters. The funeral was Feb. 14 in Grantham MB Church.

David K. Schroeder

David K. Schroeder

David K. Schroeder died Jan. 26. He was born Jan. 5, 1908 to John and Katherine Schroeder in Main Centre, Sask. He helped on the family farm. He gained assurance of salvation under the ministry of Henry Wiebe and was baptized in Main Centre in 1928. He sang in quartets and choirs. He attended Herbert Bible School. He married Elizabeth Rempel Oct. 19, 1930. They lived on the farm. In 1939 he purchased Main Centre Post Office. In 1958 they moved to Swift Current, Sask. where he was porter at the Healy Hotel. Other positions included secretary-manager of Prairie Pioneer Lodge and manager of Pennant Credit Union and of Mennonite Mutual Fire Insurance. He was involved first in Main Centre MB Church, then in Swift Current (Bridgeway) MB Church. He helped organized the first MCC auction in Swift Current. He was faithful in devotions and enjoyed listening to Vernon McGee on radio. He prayed daily for his family. Family was very important. After retirement he learned to use a computer, did woodwork, sang and played guitar. He wrote e-mails, including a daily devotional for his children. Predeceased by 2 brothers; 5 sisters, he is mourned by sons Arnold Schroeder of Winnipeg, Alfred of Oakville; daughters Annabelle Martens and Sylvia Martens of Swift Current, Alvina Rempel of Calgary and Pauline Power of Edmonton; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 1 brother; 2 sisters. The funeral was Jan. 31 in Bridgeway Church.

Elsie Dyck

Elsie Dyck

Elsie Dyck died Feb. 12. She was born in Muntau, southern Russia in 1922 to John and Margaret Warkentin. The family immigrated to Canada in 1924. Her father died when she was young and together with her family she worked to make ends meet. She married Nick Dyck in 1943. She sang in many choirs and quartets. She had a strong faith in God. She served wherever she could, including 3 years with MCC. They travelled a great deal. Her family was her pride and joy. Predeceased by 1 brother and 1 sister; she is mourned by Nick; daughters Eleanor and Sandra; 3 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 1 brother. The funeral was Feb. 17 at Portage Ave. MB Church, Winnipeg.

Harold Dyck

Harold Dyck

Harold Dyck died Feb. 28. He was born Nov. 16, 1935 to David and Katie Dyck. He grew up on the family farm in Newton, Man. He became a Christian at an early age. He attended Winkler Bible School. He earned a Registered Psychiatric Nursing degree from Manitoba School, Portage la Prairie, Man. in 1957. In 1963 he married Jane Zdan. They farmed at Oakville. He also was a psychiatric nurse, drove school bus and earned a pilot’s license. In 1979 they moved to Abbotsford where they farmed and he built houses. He was diagnosed with MS in 1988 and confined to a motorized scooter. He witnessed where he could. He attended Central Heights Church, then Abbotsford Evangelical Free Church. He is mourned by Jane; son Randy; daughters Bethany Heppner and Leslie; grandchildren; 3 brothers; 2 sisters. The funeral was Mar. 4 in Abbotsford Evangelical Free Church.

Helena (Lena) Tielmann

Helena (Lena) Tielmann

Helena (Lena) Tielman died Jan 31. She was born Oct. 23, 1927 to Jakob and Helena Tielmann in Neuhalbstadt, Sagradowka, Ukraine. Her father was arrested and executed when she was 10. She became responsible for her younger siblings because her mother worked on the collective farm. She accepted Jesus at 14 and was baptized in 1941. In 1943 they fled to Germany but were taken back to Russia after the war. She became a logger. She became ill, was hospitalized and released as disabled. After Stalin’s death the family was released from exile and moved south. In 1971 she immigrated to Canada. She worked in Tabor Home, Abbotsford. These were the best years of her life and she made many friends. Predeceased by brother Jake; step-brothers John Hamm and David Hamm; stepsisters Mary Wiebe and Annie Hamm; she is mourned by brothers Peter of Abbotsford, Walter of Germany; stepbrothers Martin Hamm, Victor Hamm, Jake Hamm, Henry Hamm and Cornie Hamm; stepsisters Martha Kroeker and Lydia Kroeker; Art and Tina Wiebe. The funeral was in King Road MB Church, Abbotsford.

Annie Penner

Annie Penner

Annie Penner died Feb. 4. She was born Sept. 1, 1915 in Main Centre, Sask. to Johann and Justina Siemens. They moved to Yarrow, B.C. in 1939. She attended Elim Bible School. She married Frank Sawatsky in 1946. They attended Arnold (B.C.) MB Church. He died in a car accident in 1952. She married Corny Penner. He died in 1962. She sold the farm and moved to Abbotford, where she worked as a homemaker and as a cook at Columbia Bible College. She demonstrated love for her family and was dedicated to good deeds. She had a zest for living, was generous to and concerned for others. She doted on her grandchildren, painted, practiced reflexology and volunteered at MCC. She made more than 1000 blankets for MCC. Predeceased by Frank and Corny, she is mourned by sons Len, Les and Frank; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; stepchildren Lilly Bowering, Margaret Barron and Martha Bergen; 5 step-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren. The funeral was Feb. 9 in Clearbrook MB Church.

Abram Warkentin

Abram Warkentin

Abram Warkentin died Feb. 2. He was born Sept. 11, 1923 in Memrick, Russia, to Heinrich and Margarete Warkentin. In 1929 the family fled to Germany. His father died and his mother with her children immigrated to Brazil. When he was 20 he committed his life to Jesus on the basis of Philippians 2:9–11 and was baptized. He married Aganetha Federau Oct. 24, 1949. They immigrated to Canada in 1961, living first in Winnipeg, then in Kelowna, B.C. and finally in Abbotsford. He farmed until his retirement. They joined King Rd. MB Church, Abbotsford. He sang in the German choir for many years. He enjoyed visiting his children and grandchildren. Predeceased by 2 brothers and 1 sister, he is mourned by Aganetha; sons Walter and John; 3 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter. The funeral was Feb. 6 in King Road MB Church.

William (Bill) J. Wiebe

William (Bill) J. Wiebe

William J. Wiebe died Jan. 25. He was born Oct. 10, 1910 to Jacob and Agnes Wiebe in Alexandrodar, Kuban, Russia. The family immigrated to Canada in 1925, settling in Manitou. He was a farm hand. He was baptized in 1932. He married Margaret Rempel Sept. 12, 1933. They moved to Black Creek, B.C. in 1936, where he logged. In 1940 they moved to a dairy farm in East Chilliwack, B.C. They were charter members of East Chilliwack MB Church. He was an usher, treasurer, caterer and council member. He was also a charter member and board member of East Chilliwack Co-op and East Chilliwack Credit Union. He also worked as an electrician. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking, teaching his grandchildren to use tools and equipment. Predeceased by Margaret in 1995, son Ed, 1 grandson, he is mourned by son Vic; daughter Wilma Stobbe; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; 1 brother. The funeral was Feb. 17 in Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.
