Jake Hess, a gospel singer for 60 years, died Jan. 4 at age 76. He was a four-time Grammy winner who sang with some of the premier quartets in gospel music and influenced the career of Elvis Presley. He was most recently a member of Bill Gaither’s Homecoming Friends. Hess was the third member of the Bill Gaither group to die within the last 2 years. Howard (Happy) Goodman died in 2002 at age 81 and Vestal Goodman died December 27, 2003 at age 74. The Goodmans were part of the Happy Goodman Family act which recorded 15 No. 1 gospel music songs and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1998.

Douglas B. Miller, associate professor of Biblical and Religious Studies at Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kan., has been appointed Old Testament editor for Believers Church Bible Commentary, published by Herald Press. He replaces Elmer Martens of Fresno who has been editor since the inception of the commentary series 25 years ago. Gordon Zerbe has already replaced Willard Swartley as New Testament editor. Believers Church Bible Commentary is a cooperative project of Brethren in Christ Church, Brethren Church, Church of the Brethren, General Conference Mennonite Church, Mennonite Brethren Church, and Mennonite Church.
