Faith and media centre launched. The Centre for Faith and Media was launched December 10 in both Toronto and Calgary. A national, independent organization, the Centre has goals of assisting Canadian journalists provide accurate and informed coverage of religion and spirituality issues; helping faith communities work with media more effectively; and conducting research on matters of faith and media. “Canadian journalists are faced with the challenge of covering Canada’s remarkably diverse religious landscape under deadlines, and often without much context and background information,” says Richelle Wiseman, the Centre’s managing director. “Through our workshops, guides and website database, we can provide them with access to appropriate background materials, resources and contact people within a variety of communities. The Centre has been involved in producing guides for journalists covering Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Guides in development include Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism. Planned for 2004 are a public forum and workshops for journalism students, newsrooms and faith group leaders seeking media relations training.
