Recent flooding of the Ganges River in the Malda district of West Bengal, India, has driven 30,000 families from their homes. Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), in cooperation with several aid organizations in India, is supplying blankets, tarpaulins and food. MCC’s contributions, worth $33,000 Cdn. have benefited 6,800 families in 52 villages, but flooding and changes in the direction of the Ganges River remain long-term serious problems in the area. Below, a resident of the Malda district in his flooded village.

Former residents of the village of Steinfeld (Schlachtin), Ukraine, met Sept. 6–7 in Surrey, B.C. to celebrate and remember God’s faithfulness. Some had emigrated following World War I, others were refugees retreating with the German army in 1943. The history of the settlement was presented by John N. Klassen and a memorial service for the many who had perished under the Communist regime was held. A worship service was held in South Langley (B.C.) MB Church with a message by Henry Hildebrand. Special guest at the reunion was Abram A. Olfert, 99, born in Steinfeld and now living in Abbotsford.
