A dream has come true for Leamington (Ont.) MB Church. A skateboard park, “The Hanger,” has been built on church property. Youth pastor Graham Beer, who says he is a dreamer, went to the congregation and the local high school to share his vision. He received a positive response, expertise, financial resources and volunteer help. Ron Bartel and son Steve, an engineering student, put many hours into the construction of the various ramps, including a mini-ramp and rails. Youth helped in the final stages of putting everything together.
The park is open seven nights a week as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Personnel from the church supervise the activities. The park is open to elementary school children on Wednesday nights, and they are then invited to attend the Club program as well. Friday night is high school night, and the young people are also invited to attend the youth program at the church. Approximately 50–60 people are there each evening. A competition for skateboarders, BMX bikers and rollerbladers is being planned. The new venture has opened many doors, both with youth and their parents. Even the local police have commented how they appreciate this safe place alternative for skateboarders in the community. —Eleanor Hamm | |||||||
