Glenbush church celebrates 75 years

Glenbush, Sask.

Previous | Next

Over 200 people from five provinces and several states gathered at the Mennonite Brethren church in Glenbush, Sask. July 5–6 to celebrate 75 years of God’s faithfulness to the congregation. The weather was comfortable and there was excitement in the air as people renewed friendships and browsed at displays.

The displays included photos of church buildings, developments, baptisms and pastors over the years, a list of all members, and a pieced quilt with embroidered verses made by the church women several years ago. The Glenbush MB Church began through immigration from the Soviet Union, and formally organized July 15, 1928. In its early years, it was served by two lay pastors, for 29 and 25 years each. Five paid pastors have given leadership the last 22 years. The current pastor is John D. Klassen.

A Saturday evening program at Medstead school, using the original church pulpit, reminisced about the past more formally. The next morning people gathered at the Medstead school again for a celebration service. A welcome gentle rain had fallen, and the farmers of the church were all smiles.

The celebration focused on the theme, “Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together” (Psalm 34:3). Choirs led by Henry Siemens and Leonard Harms, as well as the current worship band, praised God in English and German, and Ike Bergen, former moderator of the Canadian MB Conference, preached.
