It is an association – an association of Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches in at least 66 countries with a total membership of about 1,300,000 in 99 member and associate churches. In North America, the membership in 2003 stood at just over 450,000.
Members of these churches send representatives to sit on the 120-member General Council which governs the work of MWC. They meet every three years. A 14-person executive is chosen from this Council to guide the discussion and decision-making. The executive meets annually.
Mennonite World Conference exists to: create opportunities for Anabaptist-related churches throughout the world to communicate and cooperate across national and regional boundaries; facilitate community between Anabaptist-related churches worldwide; and relate to other Christian world organizations.
In order to accomplish this, there is a:
- Faith and Life Council (to clarify convictions);
- Peace Council (to support peace initiatives);
- Global Mission Fellowship (to facilitate mission dialogue);
- Global Youth Summit (to encourage youth to learn to know each other and network); and YAMEN (Young Anabaptist–Mennonite Exchange Network);
- Global History Project (a history of Mennonites/ Brethren in Christ in each of the five continents is envisioned, with the first, on Africa, now available);
- Quarterly journal (Courier);
- Global Gift Sharing Program.
Mennonite World Conference Global Assembly meets every six or seven years for worship, fellowship and learning.
