Elsie Dyck
Elsie Dyck passed away Aug. 24. She was born Dec. 17, 1919 in Hierschau, Ukraine and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1926. She accepted Jesus at revival meetings in Pincher Creek, Alta. and was baptized later in South Abbotsford (B.C.) MB Church. She worked in Vancouver, then took a Practical Nurses Course, and served in this career until retirement. She travelled and took care of her mother. She served in Clearbrook (B.C.) MB Church library for a number of years. She was known for praying for and supporting missionaries. She is mourned by brother Ernest. The funeral was Aug. 28 in Clearbrook MB Church.
Anne Wiebe
Anne Wiebe died Aug. 12. She was born Apr. 1, 1923 to Henry and Justina Poettker in Ukraine. The family immigrated to Canada in 1925 and settled in Ontario in the late 1920s. Anne left home at 13 to work as a domestic in Hamilton. She accepted the Lord in her youth and was a member of United Mennonite Church, Port Rowan, Ont. She married Nick Wiebe Oct. 27, 1946 after waiting 4 years for him to return from the war. Nick died in 1988. Anne volunteered at Port Rowan MCC Thrift Shop, Norfolk General Hospital Gift Shop and other community organizations. She had a large circle of friends and was known as a great cook, a committed friend and a godly woman who loved and cared for her family. She attended Port Rowan MB Church. Predeceased by Nick, 1 grandson, 2 brothers, she is mourned by sons Larry and Bill of Port Rowan; daughter Carolyn of Simcoe, Ont.; 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; 1 sister; 2 brothers. The funeral was Aug. 14 in Port Rowan MB Church.
John Jacob Pauls
John Pauls was born to Jacob and Anna Pauls Aug. 13, 1920 in southern Russia. The family fled to Germany in 1929 and immigrated to Manitou, Man. in 1930. John was baptized upon his confession of faith in Jesus in September 1941. He served in camps in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario as a conscientious objector during World War II. He married Verna Pauls July 10, 1949. They farmed in Purves, Man., retiring to Manitou in 1996. John was involved with Boys Brigade in Manitou MB Church, and built things for Winkler, Pembina Valley and Simonhouse Bible camps. He was known for his willingness to lend help to friend and neighbour without thought of payment in return.
Samuel Shier
Samuel Shier died Aug. 13. He was born May 16, 1915 in Winnipeg to Adam and Amelia Shier. He was baptized upon his confession of faith in 1939, joining Northend (now Elmwood) MB Church. He sang in the choir and ushered. He worked for C.A.DeFehr for many years, then for Gulf Oil until his retirement at 63. He married Irma Harder in 1940. They spent time with their family at their Falcon Lake cottage. He loved fishing and hunting with his sons. He also grew beautiful flowers, growing up to 200 varieties of gladioli. After Irma died in 1997, he lived in Bethania Personal Care Home. Predeceased by Irma, 4 brothers and 2 sisters, he is mourned by sons Richard and Carl of Winnipeg, Vern of Edmonton; daughter Rita Boese, Arizona; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 brother; 1 sister. The funeral was Aug. 18 in Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, Winnipeg.
Peter N. Friesen
Peter N. Friesen died Aug. 17. He was born Feb. 1, 1914 in Gouldtown, Sask. He married Henrietta Braun of Beechy, Sask. Nov. 8, 1942. They farmed in Beechy, Gouldtown and Main Centre, retiring to Swift Current, Sask. in 1974. Peter had a deep love of Jesus, his Lord and Saviour. He demonstrated this through his concern and love for his family and friends, and his faithful service in the church. He was always ready to help people. He loved to read the Bible and devotional material. A favourite pastime was visiting and travelling with family and friends. Predeceased by infant daughter Viola, 1 granddaughter, 3 brothers, 4 sisters, he is mourned by Henrietta; children Darlene Penner, Bill, Jack, Judy, Linda Harder and Peggy Smart; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 1 sister. The funeral was Aug. 20 in Bridgeway MB Church, Swift Current.
George Hezekiah Nicklin
George Nicklin died July 12. He was born in Vancouver Mar. 15, 1940 to William and Shirley Nicklin. He grew up in Merritt, B.C. His father died when George was 14 and at 16 he began working to support his mother and younger siblings. He was a heavy duty mechanic for the Dept. of Highways. He also worked in a service station and an electronics store, and then was maintenance man at Cariboo Bethel Church, Williams Lake B.C., for 19 years. He had a talent for fixing things. He married Eve Rogalsky in 1966. He accepted the Lord in 1979 and served in the church as PA operator, Boys Brigade leader and elder. He booked many events in the church for the community, thereby making people feel welcome. Health was an ongoing problem and he received a liver transplant in 1999. He enjoyed coffee and lunches with friends and sunrises from his patio. He is mourned by Eve, son Peter; daughter Mary Jeanne; 5 grandchildren; 1 brother; 1 sister. The funeral was July 17 at Cariboo Bethel Church.
Rita Martichenko
Rita Marlene Martichenko died July 22. She was born February 1942 to Alex and Velma Dell in Foam Lake, Sask. She attended Briercrest Bible College, Caronport, Sask. and Regina Teachers’ College, receiving her BA from the University of Saskatchewan in 1974. She married Ed Martichenko in 1967. She taught in Regina and Arelee, Sask. She accepted Jesus at 11 and led others to the same decision. She lived her faith on a daily basis and practised more than preached. She was a compassionate and understanding friend. She taught community Bible clubs and Sunday school, and worked on the Biggar and District Home Care board and on the Saskatchewan Home Care Association Community and Member Relations Committee. Her hobbies and interests included reading, birdwatching, gardening, field work, cycling, swimming, travelling, sewing and making quilts for world relief. She is mourned by Ed; her parents; 1 brother.
Dick Brown

Dick Brown was born Nov. 4, 1924 to Dr. and Mrs. Hubert Brown in Toronto. The family moved to Fort St. John, B.C. when Dick was 5. Summers were spent with his father on pack trips into the mountains on Indian Department business. Later he packed horses for the survey crew on the Alaska Highway and led hunting trips into the mountains. Upon discharge from the air force following World War II he obtained a degree in geological engineering from UBC. He married Alicia Jane Hoare in Whitehorse in 1949. He worked with Imperial Oil in Edmonton, Pacific Petroleum in Fort St. John and Oilfield Consultants and then consulted independently. He developed a section of land near Fort St. John. He retired in 1996. He committed his life to the Lord as an adult and became active in the church. He enjoyed camping, canoeing, hiking, cross-country and downhill skiing, and travelling. Predeceased by 1 brother, he is mourned by Alicia; daughters Carolyn Freeman; Debbie Andersen, Judy Payne; Joy Gunther; 12 grandchildren; 3 sisters. The memorial service was May 30 in North Peace MB Church, Fort St. John.
Mary Ann Konrad
Mary Ann Konrad died July 28. She was born to Jacob and Anna Rempel Mar. 12, 1928 in Main Centre, Sask. When she was 12 the family moved to Clearbrook, B.C. She accepted Christ, was baptized and joined Clearbrook MB Church. She attended MB Bible School, Abbotsford, B.C. (now CBC). She married Peter Konrad in 1949. They lived in Burnaby, B.C. Her faith was paramount and she supported her husband in his church and conference work. She enjoyed travelling and visiting relatives and friends. She looked after Peter when he became ill until he died in 1994. In 1997 she moved to Clearbrook, joining Clearbrook MB Church. Predeceased by Peter, she is mourned by daughters Heather of Shawnigan Lake, B.C., Rosanne of Whitehorse, Yukon, Violet of Sherbrooke, Que; sons Raymond of Burnaby, B.C., Alfred of Kamloops, B.C.; 9 grandchildren; 2 sisters; 2 brothers. The funeral was in Clearbrook, B.C.
