Annie Schmidt
Annie Schmidt died June 28. She was born Nov. 30, 1910 in Langham, Sask. to John and Susie Wall. The early loss of her mother was difficult. She became a Christian at 19 and was baptized in the Hepburn (Sask.) MB Church. She married Jacob Schmidt Oct.25, 1931. They farmed in Waldheim 31 years, moving to Saskatoon in 1963. She took in boarders and worked as a janitor. Their 1948 ordination as deacons was a lifelong mission. She was a person of order, a prayer warrior, deeply concerned for her family. Predeceased by Jacob in 2002, she leaves daughters Lois Block and Sophie Schmidt; sons Klinten and Wayne; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral was July 3 in West Portal MB Church, Saskatoon.
Elmer Ervin Quiring
Elmer Quiring died May 26. He was born Aug. 26, 1921 into a Christian home. His mother died when he was 8. He accepted Christ and was baptized in 1938 in the Hepburn (Sask.) MB Church. After retiring from farming at Hepburn and his work at Saskatoon Motor Products, he created beautiful things from wood. He was a loving, generous man. Precedeased by wife Louise, he leaves son Bruce; daughter June Dacey; three grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren. The funeral was May 28 in West Portal MB Church, Saskatoon.
Anna Poetker
Anna Poetker died June 14. She was born Mar.19, 1914 in Orenburg, Ukraine to Gerhard and Agatha Klassen. In 1926 they immigrated to Canada, eventually settling in Steinbach, Man. Anna did domestic work in Winnipeg. She married Jacob Poetker in 1938 and farmed with him. They moved to Steinbach in 1991. Alzheimer’s Disease eroded her abilities. She was easy-going, friendly, hospitable, devoted to family. She often sang favourite hymns. Predeceased by Jacob and two children in infancy, she leaves daughters Helen Christoffersen, Frieda Fast, Irene Rochon, Betty Osborne, Edith Huskins, Irma Esau; sons Art, Jake, Peter, Ben, Phil; 25 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 brother; 1 sister. The funeral was June 18 in Steinbach MB Church.
Johann Wiens
Johann Wiens died July 18. He was born June 29, 1914 to Franz and Anna Wiens, in Sagradowka, Ukraine. They moved to the Amur River region in 1927. They escaped Russia over the river into China with the entire village in December 1930. They immigrated to Paraguay. He accepted Jesus as Saviour and was baptized in 1934. He married Lena Klippenstein Aug. 28, 1937. In 1976 they moved to Canada, living in Clearbrook, B.C. and St. Catharines, Ont. Predeceased by Lena, 6 siblings, 1 grandson, he leaves sons Franz, Heinrich, John; daughter Erika Schroeder; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; 1 sister; 2 stepbrothers. The service was in Scott St. MB Church, St. Catharines.
Jacob J. Klassen

Jacob J. Klassen died Nov. 23. He was born Mar. 3, 1910 to Jacob J. and Helena Klassen in New York, Ukraine. He early lost his father and at 14, his mother. He came to Christ through an American evangelist’s ministry in 1922. He immigrated to Canada with his stepfather in 1924. He moved to New Hamburg, Ont. He lost his job through eye problems. He remained nearly blind in the right eye and struggled in prayer to regain enough vision in the left to be employed. He was baptized in 1929, in Kitchener (Ont.) MB Church. He married Tina Dyck in 1938. He was in the dairy business 23 years. He loved the people contact. They moved to Kitchener in 1960. He worked as greenskeeper at golf courses. When retired they travelled and did volunteer service. He rededicated himself to prayer. Predeceased by Tina in 1994, son Peter and daughter Hildegard in 2001, he leaves daughter Linda, son John, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings. The funeral was November 27 in Scott St. MB Church, St. Catharines, Ont.
Mary Kramer
Mary Kramer died Mar. 29. She was born Oct. 29, 1911 to Peter and Katerina Dyck of Kronsweide, Ukraine. She had a loving, secure childhood until age 8 when bandits shot her father and two brothers, and her mother and another brother died of typhus soon after. The remaining children lived with the Nick Voth family, who shared what they had. She accepted the Lord as Saviour at 14. She immigrated to Canada with her married sister. She worked as a domestic, then went to Mennonite Collegiate Institute, Gretna, Man. She graduated from St. Boniface School of Nursing in 1945. She nursed in various Manitoba locations 34 years. She saw her work as ministry to God and people. She married Karl Kramer in 1983. They enjoyed travelling the world, visiting family, friends and mission churches. She loved music and singing. Predeceased by Karl, 8 siblings, she leaves 6 step-children, 11 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild. The funeral was April 2 in Elmwood MB Church, Winnipeg.
John W. Baerg
John Baerg died Nov. 24. He was born May 11, 1934 in Coaldale, Alta. to David and Anna Baerg. He received Christ at 9. The family moved to Chilliwack, B.C. He attended MB Bible College, Winnipeg, and the University of B.C. He married Evelyn Neumann in 1961. He pastored in Kief, North Dakota and planted a new MB church in Victoria (Saanich Community Church). In 1972 he joined Campus Crusade full-time, working in Abbotsford, Toronto and Edmonton. In 1996 he became national director of CC’s prayer ministry, in Langley, B.C. He loved the church, serving on church boards. He regularly prayed for others, sending them personalized prayers based on Scripture. He was diagnosed with cancer in 1999. He faced his death joyfully. Predeceased by 4 siblings, he leaves Evelyn, daughters Joan Lalor and Arlene Wilkins, 2 grandchildren, 6 brothers, 1 sister.
Marie Reimer
Marie Reimer died July 7. She was born to Peter and Anna Friesen Oct. 27, 1920 in Nelson, B.C. After several moves, they settled in Langley, B.C. She studied at Prairie Bible Institute, Three Hills, Alta. She did mission work in the Kootenays. She married Jakob Reimer in 1952. They were missionaries to the Doukhobours and others in the Slocan Valley, B.C. Her favourite time was summer when they did Daily Vacation Bible Schools. In winter she planned the crafts. They moved to Chilliwack, B.C. in 1970, but returned to the Slocan Valley for DVBS as health allowed. Jake died in 1990. She devoted herself to her granddaughters. Predeceased by Jake, she leaves son Paul, 2 granddaughters. The service was July 9 in Menno Home Chapel, Abbotsford, B.C.
Eva Loewen
Eva Loewen died July 1. She was born Dec. 28, 1921 in Kleefeld, Siberia to Peter and Helena Janzen. In 1924 they immigrated to Mexico, later to Manitoba. They moved to Springstein, Man. when she was in Grade 6. She prayed for salvation. She evangelized in school. Unable to complete high school, she worked out and went to Bible school a term. She married David Loewen June 28, 1942. They moved to Yarrow, B.C. Their hobby farm and hospitality were enjoyed by visitors. They retired to Clearbrook, B.C. Predeceased by David, she leaves sons Rufus, Walter, Harry, Aron; daughter Olga; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; 4 sisters. The service was July 7 in Clearbrook MB Church.
John Peter Martens
John Peter Martens died June 30. He was born Mar. 2, 1911 in Alexanderwohl, Molotschna, Ukraine to Peter P. and Helena Martens. In 1925 they immigrated to Coaldale, Alta. At 19 he was converted through a message by missionary Frank Wiens. He was baptized in 1930. He attended Bible school. He was briefly in a CO camp. He married Sara Klassen in 1946. They lived in Arnold, B.C. He farmed and trucked. She died in 1971. He married Emilie Bartel Sommerfeld in 1971.They moved to Clearbrook, B.C. in 1973. He sang in the choir and did deacon work in the Clearbrook MB Church. They enjoyed travelling. Predeceased by Sara, daughter Mary Simpson, 4 siblings, he leaves Emilie; daughters Viola Klassen, Beverly Schroeder, Trudy Janzen; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters; 1 brother. The service was July 5 in Clearbrook MB Church.
Jacob Quiring
Jacob Quiring died June 18. He was born July 16, 1922 in Adelsheim, Yazykovo, Russia to Abram and Maria Quiring. His happy childhood ended when 1929 emigration attempts were unsuccessful and they were deported to Siberia. His preacher father died of starvation. The family was separated. During WWII he was conscripted into the German army. Wounded and expecting to die, he found peace with God. He was a prisoner of war in France. In 1948 he returned to Germany. He found his mother. They immigrated to Canada. He found a spiritual home and was baptized. He married Margaret Neumann in 1950. He farmed and built houses. He was a charter member of Central Heights and King Road churches. He served as church moderator and on the Tabor Home board. Margaret died in 1990. He married Katie Letkeman in 1992. He was generous and had boundless energy. Predeceased by Margaret, son Peter, he leaves Katie; sons Ernie, Dave; daughter Marlene; 9 grandchildren; stepchildren.
John Derksen
John Derksen died June 11. He was born June 14, 1907 in Orenburg, Russia to Johann and Helena Derksen. After his father’s death he lived with an uncle until his mother re-married. They immigrated to Saskatchewan in 1925. He married Aganeta Wiebe on Oct. 27, 1929. They lived in Cactus Lake, Bournemouth, then Rabbit Lake, Sask. He rededicated his life to the Lord. They moved to Sumas Prairie, B.C. in 1945, joining the Arnold MB Church. He retired from farming in 1964. He volunteered, travelled, fished. They moved to Clearbrook in 1966. Aganeta died in 1983. He married Helen Wiens in 1984. She died 1996. He faithfully nursed each of his wives. His favourite Scripture was Psalm 103. Predeceased by Aganeta, Helen, infant daughter Wilma, son John, he leaves daughters Betty Raymond, Freda Reimer, Agnes Fast, Lena Thielmann, Linda Penner; son Peter; 20 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; 1 brother. The service was June 16 in Clearbrook MB Church.
Annie Hamm
Annie Hamm died June 9. She was born to Martin and Maria Hamm near Elie, Man. She loved animals and children. She received Christ at an early age. Her mother died in 1964. Her father re-married in 1968; they moved to Clearbrook, B.C. She was baptized in 1971 in Clearbrook MB Church. Her father died in 1974. She and her brother moved into a Mennonite Central Committee group home. She later lived in private homes. She volunteered at the MCC office and material resource centre. She furthered her baking, cooking, serving skills at the MCC achievement centre. She embroidered, knit and crocheted gifts for others. She loved to sing and listen to music. The service was June 14 in Clearbrook MB Church.
Katharina Janzen
Katharina Janzen died June 7. She was born to Kornelius and Margareta Klassen Aug. 28, 1917. They fled Russia in 1929 and immigrated to Paraguay, living first in Fernheim and then in Friesland Colony. Here she married Jakob Janzen. They immigrated to Canada in 1957, settling in Winnipeg. In 1965 they moved to Vancouver. They accepted Christ and were baptized in Sherwood Mennonite Church. They moved to Abbotsford. After Jakob’s death she moved into a condominium. She joined Clearbrook MB Church, singing in the German choir. Precedeased by Jakob, 2 children, 1 brother, she leaves children Adina, Dither, Erich, Leni; their families; 2 siblings. The funeral was June 13 in Clearbrook MB Church.
Anna Goerzen

Anna Goerzen died June 12. She was born Aug. 8, 1908 in Rerberg, south Russia, to Peter and Anny Penner. She received Christ in revival meetings and was baptized in Reinfeld MB Church. They moved several times, hoping to leave Russia. She married Johann Klassen in the Omsk region in 1935. They were in a small fellowship group. Johann and others were imprisoned. They exchanged letters two years, comforted by God’s word. Anna and children fled to Germany in 1943 and immigrated to Canada in 1948, settling in Yarrow, B.C. In 1956 she learned Johann died in 1942. She married Hermann Goerzen in 1960, moving to Kelowna. She cared for his children as her own. She enjoyed entertaining, making handcrafted gifts, letter writing, church activities, and gardening. She raised funds for her brother’s church in Siberia. She wrote a detailed account of her life. Predeceased by Johann and Hermann, 6 siblings, 1 stepdaughter, 1 granddaughter, 1 great-granddaughter, she leaves children Peter and Anne Suderman; stepchildren Henry, Walter, Rudy, Louise Deglow, Art; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 5 siblings. The service was June 18 at Clearbrook MB Church.
Katie Penner Wiebe
Katharina Wiebe died June 22. She was born May 27, 1914 to Jakob and Maria Penner in Pordenau, Molotschna. They immigrated to Canada in 1925. She accepted Christ at 13. She was baptized in Elm Creek (Man.) MB Church in 1935. She married Henry Wiebe June 9, 1935. They moved to Beamsville, Ont. They joined Vineland MB Church. She was a hard worker, resourceful, uncomplaining, an excellent seamstress. They retired to St. Catharines, Ont. after 45 years farming. They celebrated their 65th anniversary. He died in 2000. She prayed faithfully for her descendants. Predeceased by Henry, 3 siblings, she leaves daughter Mary Leveille, Katie Hochhalter, Anne Neufeld, Erika Sawatzky, 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 1 sister. The service was June 26 in Vineland MB Church.
Sarah Wiens
Sarah Wiens died Mar. 2. She was born in Lichtenau, Molotschna Oct. 18, 1918 to Julius and Sarah Wiens. After their deaths she was shuffled between homes, then taken in by strangers Cornelius and Helene Penner in 1922. She immigrated with them to Saskatchewan in 1926. She worked out at 15. At 17 she found salvation through Hebrews 3:5 and Isaiah 43:1. She attended Bible school in Herbert, Sask. She moved to Vancouver in 1941, finding domestic and factory work through the Girl’s Home. When the home closed, she was telephone coordinator for 600 girls looking for work. Despite poor health, she was active in Union Gospel Mission, Willingdon MB Church, Sunday school, and handwork. She was interested in others and prayed for them. She leaves the Penner family, friends, and children she cared for.
Mary J. Wall
Mary J. Wall died Apr. 8. She was born Aug. 31, 1916 to Frank G. and Annie Penner near Langham, Sask. She accepted Christ at 6 in evangelistic meetings. She attended North Sask. Bible Institute, Saskatoon, and was baptized. She sang in a trio and taught VBS in rural communities. She married Jake Wall Oct. 10, 1940. They farmed near Borden, Sask. over 40 years, retiring to Saskatoon in 1981. They were stewards of Borden MB Church for 25 years; she was Ladies Fellowship president many years. She was musical, hospitable, and gifted in art, decorating and gardening. In retirement she sang regularly in nursing homes. “My Father planned it all” was her testimony song. Predeceased by Jake in 1985, 2 siblings, she leaves daughters Deanna Barkman (Winnipeg), Janet Toews (Williams Lake, B.C.); sons Dennis (Saskatoon) and Allen (Lac La Biche, Alta.), 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 1 brother. The funeral was April 13 in West Portal MB Church, Saskatoon.
Gertrude Woelk
Gertrude Woelk died July 27. She was born to Fredrick and Helen Mielke Apr. 3, 1912 in South Russia. She was baptized in 1930 in Beechy (Sask.) Mennonite Church. She married David Woelk Oct. 13, 1930. They farmed. She worked hard. She taught Sunday school, and was active in the Ladies Group and Hospital Auxiliary. They moved to Saskatoon in 1975. David died in 1984. She kept busy reading, and doing handwork and puzzles. She enjoyed Bible studies and other activities. Predeceased by David, son Harry, 1 sister, she leaves daughters Helen Aiken, Gertrude Sholter; son David; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
Martha Baerg
Martha Baerg died July 30. She was born Feb. 25, 1913 in Ukraine. Her family settled in Manitoba in 1926. She accepted Jesus and was baptized in 1928. She earned her RN in 1939 and nursed at the Steinbach (Man.) hospital. She married John Baerg in 1939. They pastored in Mennonite Brethren churches in Hillsboro, Kan.and Mountain Lake, Minn., then in Virgil, Ont. from 1958 to 1976. They ministered at Clearbrook MB Church in B.C. until retiring in 1982 and returning to the Niagara, Ont. region. She worked as a nurse and on the family farm. She had many hobbies and loved music. She was a source of guidance and comfort to others. Predeceased by John in 1999, she leaves children Ruth, John Waldo, Elfrieda, Theodore, Elizabeth; 9 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter. The funeral was Aug. 2 at Cornerstone Community Church, Virgil.
Agatha Siemens Schellenberg

Agatha Siemens Schellenberg died July 28. She was born Feb. 20, 1899 to John H. and Agatha Dyck near Plum Coulee, Man. She worked hard on the farm. She learned English working 4 years in the Judge Lock home in Morden, Man. They moved to Osterwick. She married Isbrand Siemens Apr. 10, 1928. They took over the family farm. Isbrand’s death in 1948 was a difficult time; she stayed on the farm 6 more years. She moved to Winkler, Man. in 1955. She read, did handwork, and provided delicious meals for visiting family. She married David Schellenberg July 23, 1972. She joined the Winkler MB Church. David died in 1982. She was proud of her advancing age and enjoyed her 100th birthday. She maintained an independent spirit. She relied on God for strength in all circumstances. She loved and prayed for her family. Predeceased by Isbrand and David, daughter Grace, 10 siblings, she leaves daughters Irene Siemens, May Myers, Ruth Janzen; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 1 brother; 2 sisters.The service was July 31 in Winkler MB Church.
Mary Kornelsen
Mary Kornelsen died July 19. She was born Apr. 1, 1910. She served her Lord and Saviour many years. She was predeceased by her sister. The service was July 23 at Portage Ave. MB Church, Winnipeg.
Hellen McPherson
Hellen McPherson died July 21. She was born May 22, 1911 to Alexander and Mary McPherson at Marquette, Man. She spent most of her life in the Oakville, Man. area. She learned farm practices from her father, handling a team of horses at a young age. She worked in Winnipeg, then returned to operate the family farm with her mother. They later moved into town. She was cheerful and had a quick wit. She enjoyed being tricked into making sandwiches for her surprise 80th birthday. Her church home for the last years was Community Fellowship Church in Newton, Man. She looked forward to heaven. Predeceased by 4 sisters, she leaves 1 sister. The funeral was July 28 in Community Fellowship Church.
