MCC, MB leaders meet

Winnipeg, Man.

Previous | Next

Leaders of the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches and Mennonite Central Committee Canada met on May 21 for an afternoon of cordial, frank and constructive discussions. The purpose of the meeting was to address the issues raised in correspondence dated April 15th from the Board of Faith and Life (BFL) to MCC.

In attendance, representing the Mennonite Brethren were Jascha Boge, moderator, David Wiebe, executive director, Walter Unger, chair of Board of the BFL, Ken Peters, BFL representative, and Menno Martens, BFL representative. Representing MCC were Ron Dueck, chair of MCCC Board, Harold Jantz, MCCC Board member, Don Peters, executive director MCCC, and Lois Coleman Neufeld, director of Canadian programs, MCCC.

Participants articulated expectations and goals for the meeting, affirmed mutual commitments and developed a process for further discussion. Those present expressed a commitment for mutual support.

The discussion explored ways in which MCC could be more supportive of the work of all the constituent churches, including the Mennonite Brethren, and ways in which the MB Church could be more supportive of the work of MCC.

Issues addressed included editorial policies of both church and MCC publications, the screening process and accountability for MCC service and salaried workers, ownership of MCC by constituent conferences, and MCC’s involvement in politicized situations. Also discussed was the process whereby constituent churches may address their concerns to the leadership of MCC.

Each participant was asked to give an assessment of the meeting in a short closing reflection. It was unanimously agreed that the meeting was helpful, constructive, and a positive step for further dialogue. That dialogue will continue in September when MCC leadership will meet with the BFL in session in Abbotsford.
