Essential Records Publishing 2003.

Back Home is the fifth recording project of Caedmon’s Call, a 7-member band that had its roots 10 years ago as a struggling folk band of friends wanting to make music together. Today, they give God the credit for over one million record sales, six number one radio singles and 10 Dove Award nominations. Cliff Young and his wife, Danielle are the principle vocalists, along with Derek Webb, songwriter, guitarist and vocalist; Joshua Moore, multi-talented instrumentalist and song-writer; Jeff Miller bass guitarist; Garret Buell, percussionist; and Todd Bragg on the drums. Unlike their other albums, where there were generally two songwriters, this current release of Caedmon’s Call boasts of 11 different artists who have collaborated to produce a rich variety of musical and lyrical styles. I enjoyed the diversity of music from middle-eastern and Celtic flavours, to folk and contemporary rock/pop styles, all the while unified by a strong message of the importance of a vibrant personal walk with God, a love for worship and a need for the strength of belonging to the church. Some tunes are very percussive and driven, and others very acoustic. The lyrical styles vary from psalm, hymn and worship inspired, to allegories and ballads, yet all very transparent and from the heart.

This CD is very fun to listen to – the music is so full of energy and life, and yet it is so inspiring. I felt my heart being drawn to God in worship and my mind being challenged to examine my life in respect to my faith.

The music and lyrics are a beautiful fit. Impressed by the quality of musicians and vocalists and moved by the beautiful harmonies, and rich, beautiful vocal sounds, I highly recommend this CD. Because of its variety and mostly because of the obvious apparent sincerity of the Caedmon’s Call, I believe its appeal spans a large age group from teen to Babyboomer.
