Fourteen high school seniors participated in the first Ministry Quest retreat hosted by MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno March 7–12. These youth were nominated by their home church because they demonstrated a growing faith, leadership ability and interest in ministry as a vocation.
Ministry Quest is a part of the new initiative “Hearing the Call” begun by the Seminary at last summer’s convention. John Neufeld is spearheading the program which is funded by the Lilly Endowment Foundation. It is designed to give high school youth the opportunity to explore ministry as a vocation. One of the ways this is being done is by exposing the youth to seminary life, and comments by the youth indicate they took full advantage of their opportunities: “The presentation that most influenced my thinking was by Jim Holm, about passionately following Jesus. It really made me think about aspects of Christ I’d never thought of before, and how to become a better leader by better following Him.” “I liked going through the Bible and reading all the different call stories. I really enjoyed all the different talks; they were all very good.” “My perceptions have all been changed but especially those of the church and theology. Valerie Rempel was awesome and thoroughly explained theology in an interesting way.” All of these youth are returning to a church-based mentoring relationship.
