Broken Drum

Jon Buller. Hear the Music. 2002

Personal questions and experiences form the basis of Jon Buller’s album Broken Drum. The music crosses over from Buller’s previous work of worship songs and Steve Bell-type guitar melodies to a contemporary rock/pop sound. Each song brings a unique sound to this uniform album. From a string quartet to kazoos, from a rap artist to a Mennonite children’s choir, Broken Drum offers variety that will appeal to almost any listener. Although the songs are not worship songs per se, they are worshipful in nature; seeking God through the tough questions and circumstances that accompany life. Buller recognizes that life does not always (and perhaps should not?) exist on mountaintop experiences alone. Mountaintops were given to us as inspiration, but the reality of life in a valley exists.

Buller personalizes this idea in his song Love Me, which gives the listener a glimpse into one of his own “valley” moments. Speaking on his own experience of the divorce of his parents (an experience all too common for youth today) he sings of emotions entwined within that reality and a cry out to God for love. A simple yet touching story that leaves you on the edge of a tear if you’re like me.

This release has been long awaited by Buller fans. His previous album was released 4 years ago. Many of the songs included in Broken Drum were written while Jon was travelling and establishing his Hear the Music Ministries. Hear the Music seeks to reach people of all ages and walks of life. First established in Winnipeg as a monthly praise and worship night, Jon Buller and accompanying band Freemen have travelled both east and west sharing their passion for God through this growing ministry (htmministries.comOutside link).

We recommend this CD to anyone who is looking to add a uniquely creative addition to their library The album will challenge you to look to Christ in your everyday experiences. We found this CD both an inspiration and a solace, an invitation to know God personally.
