Where is He?

Alvin G. Ens

The wise men asked of Herod
(a foolish thing to do),
“Where is he?”
Asked a Roman overlord
with gubernatorial ambitions
about a rising star
in the Jewish heavens.
Not politically astute!

A long-lost remembrance
flickered briefly:
“In Bethlehem.
Go and see.”
With naivete to nativity,
strange gifts laden,
a light breaks in.
Wisdom in coming,
wisdom in searching,
wisdom in worship.
And they went home
a different way.

If we ask in shopping mall
(a foolish thing to do),
“Where is He?”
ask a frantic shopper
gift laden
with charitable predilection
about a light
breaking into the world,
will a long-lost remembrance
flicker briefly?
And will we go home
a different way?

Alvin G. Ens lives in Abbotsford, B.C.
