Mennonite Publishing House in Scottdale, Penn. has received a one-year repayable loan of $2.3 million US from a supportive Mennonite-related institution. This buys MPH some time to raise the $5 million needed to retire all outstanding debts of the agency and allows the publishing house to continue producing denominational literature. news release, Mennonite Church Canada
Mennonite Your Way Directory has found a new home. The directory, last published in 1997, listed over 2000 homes in North America and over 200 international homes that welcome guests. The directory has been published for over 25 years, and during that time has been a hospitality network for travelers to enjoy fellowship and travel more economically. Two Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute alumni are currently working together on a Hollywood television show. Roswell, a show about teenagers and their alien friends, features a rising young star named Brendan Fehr. Actor Mel Gibson, described as an aggressive advocate of the Latin Mass, has a private chapel in his California home, where he conducts his own weekly Catholic services. He says his love for religion was transmitted to him by his father. However, he told the Italian newspaper Il Giornale that he does not support the institutional church because it is too liberal and the Vatican is a sheep in wolfs clothing. The Parents Television Council, a pro-family watchdog group, says the ten best prime-time television shows are Doc, Touched by an Angel, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, 7th Heaven, Baby Bob, Smallville, Reba, The Ponderosa, George Lopez and Bernie Mac. According to the PTC, the ten worst prime-time shows are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Off Centre, Will & Grace, Friends, WWF Smackdown, Big Brother II, CSI, Temptation Island II, That 70s Show and Boston Public. . The Word Guild, a new Ontario-based organization, and Inscribe Christian Writers Fellowship, based in Alberta, have confirmed their intention to work together to encourage and develop Canadian writers who are Christian. The Word Guild is directed by Nancy Lindquist, sponsors the annual God Uses Ink writers conference in June in Guelph, Ont. and maintains a directory of writers; its Web site is www.wordguild.com. Dean McIntyre, director of music resources for the United Methodist Church in the US, says that it is not true that John and Charles Wesley used tavern or drinking songs as the tunes for their hymns. McIntyre says the misunderstanding arose because the Wesleys preached in public places and because they used the bar tune or bar form for composing their hymns. Bar form is a medieval poetry pattern made up of three or more stanzas, and has nothing to do with taverns. Evangelical Press News Service
