Previous | Next Dresden, Germany MBMS International: Help needed as flooding in Germany affects Mennonite Brethren

Germany and other parts of Europe, including Austria and the Czech Republic, are experiencing drastic flooding. Reports to MBMS International say it is the biggest emergency operation since World War II.

Thousands of people in Germany have been forced to evacuate their homes, including a dozen families from the Mennonite Brethren church in Dresden. Franz Rathmair, MBMS Internationals regional director for Europe, described the flooding in Dresden as unbelievable. The church is still in good condition, but there has been damage to families homes, and one member lost his entire grain crop.

Over 15 people have been killed in Germany and 25 continue to be missing, according to a CNN report in late August. Cleanup and rebuilding costs are estimated to reach about $20 billion dollars US across Germany, and in other regions of Europe the cost will also reach into the billions of dollars.

The three German Mennonite Brethren conferences are requesting prayer and financial help from MB congregations in Germany as well as North American MB churches. Funds should be designated Project P-0140, German Flood Relief, and sent to MBMS International, 2169 Riverton Ave., Winnipeg, Man. R2L 2E5. an MBMS International release
