Stan and Kathleen Klassen were appointed youth pastor couple at Black Creek (B.C.) MB Church July 1 after serving for a year in an interim position and serving for a year before that as volunteers with the youth. Stan previously worked on a dairy farm. Kathleen completed two years at Berean Bible College in Calgary and has her Early Childhood Education Certificate from Lethbridge (Alta.) Community College. The Klassens have five children, Benjamin, 15, Kayla, 12, Meghan, 10, Chloe, 8, and Camille, 5.
Parliament Community Church in Regina celebrated its 60th anniversary May 26, with the theme Celebrating the Blessings of God. Saskatchewan MB Conference minister Ralph Gliege spoke on Blessing Each Other Through Speech and Song. The celebration began with a worship service followed by games and a barbecue in the park, and ended with a talent night at the church.
James Loewen began serving as restorative justice coordinator for Mennonite Central Committee Canada May 13. An upcoming project he will be coordinating is The Gathering, an annual MCC-sponsored event that brings together the restorative justice community. Previously, he served a three-year MCC term in Jamaica, where he taught courses in church and family violence at Jamaican Theological Seminary and taught conflict resolution in schools. He has a multidisciplinary masters degree and a certificate of conflict resolution.
Marvin Frey has been appointed executive director/CEO of Ten Thousand Villages Canada, headquartered in New Hamburg, Ont., effective Sept. 1. Currently, he is director of program services at the Canadian Foodgrains Bank in Winnipeg. Previously, he served with Mennonite Central Committee in Africa for nine years and was director of MCC Canada for five years (he was a member of the Ten Thousand Villages Canada board of directors for that period of time). Frey replaces Doug Dirks, who has accepted the position of director of marketing for Ten Thousand Villages US. With 30 retail stores and over 100 festival sales events across Canada, Ten Thousand Villages, a program of MCC, provides fair income to Third World artisans by selling their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America.
Mennonite Educational Institute in Abbotsford, B.C. hosted the Canadian Association of Mennonite Schools 2002 Music Festival April 1921, which drew 550 students from 10 Mennonite schools across Canada. Almost 1500 people attended a concert on April 21 that featured individual bands and elementary and secondary choirs from the schools. The concert culminated with a mass band under the direction of Wayne Toews of Saskatoon, followed by six pieces by a mass choir directed by Tony Funk of Abbotsford. The next CAMS music festival is planned for Winnipeg in 2006.
