This is the first of two planned issues on the theme of leadership. This issue focuses on some of the spiritual aspects of leadership. The next issue (Aug. 2) will focus on a more technical and mundane theme: the pastor as employee.
The Mennonite Brethren Herald is sent free of charge to every member of a Canadian Mennonite Brethren church. Every spring, the MB Herald sends each church a list of its members who are receiving the Herald and asks the church to update the list, giving address changes, adding new members and removing those who are no longer members. This is in addition to the changes sent to us through the year by the churches and by subscribers themselves. In recent years, our subscription list has been growing by two or three hundred subscribers a year. This year, from July 2001 to July 2002, our list has grown by about 500 (and we are still waiting for updated lists from about 60 churches). This is good news. It is good news for the Mennonite Brethren Church and for the Kingdom of God because it means that our churches are growing, and apparently growing at an accelerated pace. It is also good news for the Herald and a reminder that we depend on the good will of the constituency. Every time a church sends us notification to add a new member to the mailing list, and every time a subscriber sends us a change of address, it is a vote of confidence that what we are publishing is a useful tool which will contribute to the spiritual growth of the members.
